Hi 10 questions again.....

I was just wondered about wolf teeth.

Do they have to be removed before bitting?
If so by dentist or vet?
How is it done?
How long is recovery?
How much does it usually cost?

Does it hurt them. . . I hate dentists :D

Thanks :)

Can only offer my experience with my youngster!

I had his removed by vet before he was bitted properly as they were quite sharp and this is what I was advised to do.

He was heavily sedated and they were removed with little difficulty, his head got incredibly heavy though!

He was completely healed within 2 weeks.

I forget how much it was, sorry but not ridiculous money.

I honestly don't think he knew a thing at the time, I was worried he might remember some of it after but he was more than happy for me to open his mouth and check the extraction sites a few times a day, he was also fine the next time his teeth were done so I would say it wasn't at all traumatic for him.

Would always have followed normal procedures when I was in UK,
Here in France, the dental technician advises leaving them in, filed off, unless they are causing a problem when ridden. He said, why create a big hole when you dont have to,The jury is still out on this one, havent decided how to proceed with youngster.

They don't have to be although many vets/dentists recommend they are. Personally I say to see how they go first. Many horses compete v successfully with WT still in.

If so by dentist or vet?
Either but the horse will have to be sedated which only the vet is legally allowed to do. Plus the vet usually gives them a bit of local anaesthetic around the area.

How is it done?
Putting it v basically, by elevating the tissue around the tooth and the pulling the tooth out. Can be a lot more complicated then that depending on the size, location, etc of the tooth.

How long is recovery?
No bit for 1 week.

How much does it usually cost?
Varies depending on who does it.

They don't really seem to notice.

Can only go on personal experience again...

My mare had a huge one and dentist said no need to remove unless affected her while riding so it stayed there for few years until last year when he found it was wobbly so pulled it out, she was already sedated and as it was loose was no bother to pull out.

I was advised not to exercise with bit in for 2 weeks but could lunge without one, not had any probs since and he very kindly didn't charge me any extra either
