Right I had the dentist out to my nearly 4 year old a few months ago. No problems found, now his wolf teeth have erupted!! They've been here a couple of weeks at least now, they aren't as big as his other teeth yet. I have only seen adult wolf teeth, they are nowhere near where his bit sits. I have stopped working him now obviously. My questions:
Would you get the dentist out again? I am inclined to leave them where they are if I can!
How long do they take til they have stopped growing so I can have his bridle back on?

I have an easter egg on offer... However it was left on the dining table next to the window and so has melted to a rather odd shape!

My now rising 5 year old has 1 wolf tooth, my dentist advised me to leave well alone unless it causes a problem, which it dosent, didnt stop riding him at any time, some people advise take them out whatever, but my view is if it aint broke dont fix it.

I was also under the opinion that if it isn't a problem, don't do anything. However, it sounds like it is for you if you have stopped work. Maybe get the dentist out once again just to be sure..?

Both of mine have wolf teeth. Who knows whether they'll be a problem for her maj but certainly BH doesn't ever seem to have been bothered by his. I don't think I ever stopped riding him because of it anyway.

Are you sure they aren't his tushes?
Wolf teeth normally erupt at around 18 months - 2yrs.
Tushes in geldings are around 4 yrs.

My mare has 1 wolf tooth, she knocked the other one out herself - bonus! :D

My 3yr old has wolf teeth, EDT came out a few months ago. when she saw then, omg, don't put a bit in his mouth (even though I had told her he was showing no signs of discomfort) get the vet and get these taken out before you do anything further...

So I phone vet and enquire about having them taken out, was asked if they were causing a problem, not as far as I can tell, so they said carry on as you were and don't worry about them.

I kinda think maybe I should take them out before they become an issue... But then my vet is a no nonsense kind of person and I trust her opinion.

The whole thing is quite confusing!

They aren't causing him any visible pain I just thought if they are a bit uncomfortable some time off work is best. I just don't know whether to get the dentist back out to check? @ forestfantasy - I will get a photo tonight and upload but am fairly sure they are wolf teeth.

Had vet out Tues (Dental specialist thankfully) to check my 3yo boy before putting bit in his mouth. He has 2 wolf teeth...She said leave well alone unless they cause a problem. They are currently not in a place to cause a problem but they may move when more teeth come through. She advised checking again in 6 mmths.

She said she only takes then out if owner insists or they are in an awkward place.

Someone tell me a bit more about tushes please. My supposedly 6 year old  has just got his third one, and the fourth is yet to make an appearance, although there is a red bump on the gum.

Hi, I have 9 year old who had 2 wolf teeth from a young age and dentist said last yr if he's not resisting bit or napping etc then leave them which I did but anyway he started resisting bit and i sort of knew something wasnt right so when dentist came a couple of weeks ago I asked him if he'd take them out as they have no use anyway and to see if that was the cause. The dentist pushed his thumb in to feel the first one n it flew out as was loose!! He took the other one out and is now riding better since (bit sore eating 1st couple of days n quidding but touchwood seems totally fine now) I now have them both in a little box they were nowhere near as big as i thought they would be! if your horse is showing the signs take them out If not might as well leave them as they are :-)

my ride and drive cob is 15yrs old and he still has his wolf teeth, they have never caused him a problem

Mr V - did you get to look at that link? & establish what you've got going on? lol.
I agree though - if they aren't causing any problems then leave them.

Stark dismay - Tushes were originally for fighting other horses in the wild - now they don't really serve much purpose, generally only males get tushes but they can been found it the odd mare. Males usually have 4, so i'd imagine your lads other one will be making an appearance soon :)

Yes, sorry I did! Yes they are wolf teeth. He does have tushes too though(they are a bit smaller than his molars but according to that diagram that's right?). I put his bridle on last night and they are not visibly in the way, they have been growing for a couple of weeks so I will see what he's like in his mouth and perhaps get him checked next time we have a zone visit... If that sounds sensible?
:)

Yes, tushes are usually smaller and pointy-er than molars.
Your approach sounds sensible, see how you go & if they're not interfering with the bit then your good to go :)

My boy had a blind wolf tooth removed as it was causing problems, he was head tossing and not accepting a contact.
My vet didn't want to take it out at first, but when he looked he said it was further forward than they usually are as well, so that would have made it uncomfortable when the bit was in his mouth, so he took it out.
Kx

Funny this thread is here, as I just got in from Horses dentist appointment. She has wolf teeth, but they dont cause her problems so dentist said to leave them. He tapped and pressed of them, with no reaction from her. He also said he doubt they will ever cause a problem of they haven't already. Shes rising 7
