Reggie had his jabs yesterday. While on site I asked the vet to have a check in his mouth as he isn't settling to being bitted as you would expect. Even at 3 (rising 4) we are still mouthing on rubber bits even though we have been regularly bitting him over the last few months. And introduced him to a bit as a yearling and frequently had a bit in his mouth ever since.

Anyway she thinks he has two top wolf teeth that will need removing.

I have a few questions for the hive mind. I will call the vets as well.

As you all know Reggie did not have the best gelding experience and with the amount of blood loss I'm worried about putting him back 'under the knife' as it were.

Is wolf tooth extraction routine these days? I'm old school and rarely came across anything needing it done.

Would it be best to take him in to the practice to have this done or is home better due to stress?

I'm dithering sorry! I've become overprotective of the ginger ninja!

It depends how loose they are. Dex had two tops and one bottom (or vice versa, he had one in a place it's not usual to have one anyway). One was super loose and the dentist took it out no problem, the other wasn't and the dentist did it but had said if it needed any more than it would have been a standing sedation job. The third the dentist wouldn't touch due to it's unusual location, so the vet came out, standing sedation and gave it a good tug, small cut to the gum needed but there was practically no blood even then. It's super routine and 99% of the time nothing to worry about I would say.
(This was earlier this year, so recent)

One of mine had an arterial bleed when having his wolf teeth removed, he was under sedation at home. This might have been due it being not in a good location which was one of the reasons to have it removed. The blood loss was nothing like a problem for the horse and the bleeding was stopped with pressure by the vet. Obviously not nice to see it.

I think this is rare and I've had others done without incident including one with large wolf teeth, one of which was cracked.

Mine had his knocked out by the EDT using DomGel . It was very quick so his must have been straightforward. I was very surprised to discover via the other thread that this seems to be illegal and should be done by a vet. I don't even know if my vet practice is aware as they didn't query it when I asked for the DomGel! I thought it was common practice.

I’ve never had trouble with bleeding or the hole left behind. Did have one decide he hated vets (for life) and refuse to be sedated by injection ever again, but the procedure itself was fine.

My previous youngster never even had to have them taken out as they never bothered her, they were absolutely tiny and only on her upper mandible. Dentist said it looks like current youngster either had them taken out by previous owner or never had them so it's definitely a horse by horse case basis imo. If they're bothering yours, it's definitely worth having them out as it's quite a minor operation the majority of the time.

I had some taken out of a youngster when he was already knocked out for gelding 🙈 absolutely no problems for him, although I doubt it was his mouth that he was worried about...
