Mission
The National Wolfwatcher Coalition,Inc.

.. is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization , (501c3),dedicated to preserving the wolf and its historic range as part of our national heritage. This grassroots effort is supported by ordinary citizens who seek to promote positive attitudes about wolves and to support wolf recovery in all areas of its historic range by:

• working to contain and reverse Congressional legislation (2011) which denies federal protections to the gray wolves of the Northern Rockies under the Endangered Species Act.

• advocating for the long term survival of the gray wolf, the Mexican gray wolf, and the red wolf by fostering:

• an appreciation of the ecological importance of this keystone predator,

• an understanding of the principles that support wolf conservation and recovery in all areas of our nation which comprise its historic range

• Educating the public, government representatives and the media about the importance of the wolf to the natural balance of nature by:

• promoting and supporting the work of wolf conservation centers nationwide

• organizing small community-based meetings and/or seminars that provide guest speakers and use multi-media programs to inspire guided discussion (i.e. Lords of Nature presentations)

• supporting all efforts to safeguard the natural habitat of the wolf

• vigorously supporting all regional and national organizations which share our goals and mission on behalf of the wolf

• building a spirit of cooperation with federal, state and local agencies (i.e.: state and federal game agencies, livestock agencies, etc.) to help foster their acceptance of (a) the important role of the wolf in the maintenance of healthy ecosystems, and (b) the use of nonlethal methods of addressing human vs. wolf conflict

• practicing the aforementioned actions with the intention of fostering good will among all groups that, traditionally, remained unsupportive of wolf recovery.

well the title was ‘please support’ :o i thought there must surely be some fellow wolf lovers among us. Also assumed some people might have something to say either about them being shot or be in favour of the farmers..

I was assuming there would be a petition, I love wolves but have the luxury of not having to defend my livestock against them. I know in big game reserves in Africa any livestock killed by animals off the reserve are compensated and wonder if a similar scheme could be tried with the wolves. If they dont get the farmers on side they are fighting a losing battle. Wolves live over a huge range and are impossible to track unless they are all caught and fitted with some sort of tracking device. It would be a very sad day if all the wolves were wiped off the earth.

Well dogs are still used for hunting here on foxes, hares, etc and in other countries on things like wolves and boar and survive - not to say I am a cheerleader for killing animals with dogs, just playing devil's advocate and that was the purpose/the reason we have a lot of breeds still around today.

oh absolutely, but to my mind (setting aside the whole hunting with dogs debate) using them on hare and foxes is one thing but I guess I honestly had never ever imagined anyone would use dogs to hunt wolves! Sounds stupid now when of course, i know we have ‘wolfhounds’.

I do sympathise with the famers who have lost livestock but surely there must be a better way?

There is actually another way. I find wolves fascinating, so tend to watch/read anything about them. They've discovered that if you play the howl of another pack, the howl that says 'yeah, we're here' other packs stay away. They did test it in Europe (poland iirc) playing a pre-recorded howl around the perimeter, & it did work. Not sure how extensively it was tested, but I remember the farmers they did show at the time were happy with it. I can't remember the man's name now, but it was the man nicknamed 'wolfman' who lived with a pack a few years ago who did the documentary.

wow thats interesting littlelegs! i just adore wolves.. it seems awful that theyve been protected to allow them to re-populate areas only to be persecuted again
