not sure if she was wearing a hat, i presume not. really shows the importance of wearing a hat at all times around horses.

my thoughts go out to her family, and the child who witnessed the accident.

I have to admit that i don't always wear a hat when leading, but stories like this make me think twice.

so sad

oh no how awful, my thoughts are with the family. I too don't wear a hat whilst leading, although I do now wear one when I lunge, but it makes you think.

I agree tragic, but not sure if it will make me wear a hat when leading, tbh. Tragedy is tragedy. Accidents happen. Awful for the family, but .... would I wear a hat if leading/lungeing an unpredictable youngster? Yes, probably, now because I have children to take care of, though tbh, I never used to. Would I wear a hat walking alongside one of my children on their ponies? No probably not.
I mean, we don't wear hats to pick out feet/ lead out to field etc, though I know now, it is recommended. I just feel the children would never have their hats off, and I never dreamt of putting a hat on to pick out my pony's feet ....
Don't know. Thoughts to the family, terrible, terrible accident.

the woman was from the yard i work on and no she wasnt wearing a hat, i was going to post yesterday about it to also show the importance of a hat when being around horses not just when riding, just couldnt bring myself to write about it.

i never wear a hard hat unless i'm riding, or i am handling something that i know to be a problem.
although i do insist that any kids on the yard wear hard hats at all times. i leave the adults to make their own safety choices.
but yeah it does make u think, i might be more inclined to wear my riding hat at all times on the yard now, no matter whom i'm handling. small price to pay for something that could save my life.

How awful I send my thoughts to her family.

I have often walked alongside my daughter while she rides out and don't wear a hat only hi viz tabbard.

A lady at my yard put her horse out last summer, next thing she remembers is lying on the ground and someone at the yard running over to her. She is not sure what happened as another horse came over to the gate and she thinks she was just pushed out of the way not sure if she hit her head on the hard ground or fence post. Thankfully she wasn't trampled BUT she was ill for a long time had awful headaches and had to have an MRI scan. She had many weeks off work, couldn't drive and had odd symptoms, for example if she watched TV she felt dizzy.

Thankfully she has now fully recovered but she and YO have said that it's advisable to wear a hard hat when dealing with horses especially at turnout bring in time, which I now do as my horse can be a monster!!

If interested see my post from last week "RE: What's the safest type of hat?? This could save your life! "

Very tragic and highlights the danger we all put ourselves in daily.

I DO wear my hat for leading in and out but only since I have been knocked to the ground and had nasty bruising to my skull handling a youngster.

Im sure people think Im over the top or over cautious but to be honest once you have had a narrow escape you do think differently.

How tragic. It really highlights the need to wear a hat when dealing with horses, but how many of us actually do so?

I grew up in the village where this happened, but I don't think I know the lady involved. I send my condolences to her family.

What a tragic accident and poor daughter was present.

I dont wear a hat leading a 'known' horse, and I definitely wouldnt wear one to walk next to a ridden horse. Accidents are accidents and I dont think anyone can place any of the blame on this lady....it would be just as easy to trip over a paving stone sustain a fatal bang to the head. Life is risky.

My horse spooked last week when I was leading her. I fell and my head just missed a truck that had been parked in yard.Bad bang on my knee instead.

That is really awful! I haven't been wearing a hat whilst lunging and leading my youngster but this has made me think a lot...will defiantly be putting my hat on tonight!
