While I am very sorry for the lady who set herself on fire decanting petrol with the gas cooker on , I fail to see how it can be the governments fault! Article today saying Maude should resign for telling people to hoard petrol in jerry cans. Surely anyone with a brain cell knows you dont get anywhere near a flame when doing this! Why is everything someone elses fault?

....... Why is everything someone elses fault?

I'm with you, and that's easily answered; it's because our mummy always told us that we shouldn't worry, it was someone else's fault, always, but never ours. FFS, I give up!! :D:D

That's how my mother explained things to me, but then I worked it out for myself. Society will be a happier place, when we accept responsibility for our own actions.

Right, that's it. Rant over!! ;)

Alec.

It's no-one's fault but her own, and sorry for her though I am, if she drives a car then she should have enough brain matter to realise why you can't smoke in a petrol station due to the risk. Why on earth anyone would take petrol INSIDE their house is completely beyond me, I hate driving the car with a jerry can (for filling the lawnmowers) due to the risk and always wedge it behind the seat or fasten through the handle with the dog lead..

Unfortunate accident but what the hell was she doing transferring petrol from 1 can to another near a gas flame duuuuuuuh!!!!!! If that is what happened surely she must know that petrol is flammable? :o :o :o

I agree, Personally I think she was a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

Well, the whole point in petrol is it combusts or else it would be pointless to put in an internal combustion engine. Not only this, she had all the tools she needed to set it off! Flame, air and petrol fumes! And this is coming from someone who is not at all into cars!! I don't think its anyone's fault but her own, no one told her to do it, and in fact it's common knowledge that this is a bad idea, I don't see why someone else's stupidity should result in a person being sacked.

Totally agree. Obviously I feel sorry for her as it must be awful, but since when is it the government's fault for someone's idiotic behaviour? Isn't it common sense not to handle petrol in your kitchen with a gas cooker?! I fail to see how this is anyone's fault but her own. Whenever a mistake happens like this everyone always immediately blames the goverment/someone else when in fact the incident could have quite easily been avoided if the subject had an ounce of common sense.

It's illegal to store petrol in or close to your home AND to store it in anything else but specific jerry cans, so she was essentially breaking the law.

However, she wouldn't have been doing it if it wasn't for the fuel crisis.

i've just gone and put my usual 10 quid in the car, there was a tanker sitting on the forecourt, filling the tanks, there is no need to horde fuel, its downright dangerous. If people want to make sure they dont run out of fuel would it not make more sense to walk, use public transport or car share when possible? Cant see why anyone needs more than a full tank of fuel at any time!
Do feel for the poor woman tho, and hope she recovers.

You see, what annoyed me about this story is on the news they stated she had set herself on fire after petrol she was decanted "ignited". Anyone with more than one brain cell knows petrol doesn't just ignite of it's own accord - my first guess was (as they failed to mention on the news headline I saw) was that she was doing something like smoking. To find out no, but she was cooking and had a cooker on makes me think she was even more of an idiot!

You cannot anyone for this - there is NOT a fuel crisis. Did I go rush out and fill muy car up? Nope. People complain about this being a 'nanny state' - you can't have it both ways and i blooming hope there is no come back and she doesn't try and place the blame on someone else as she was "told to fill up jerry cans"!!

sorry but i have no sympathy with the stupidity of this woman.

first she obviously rushed out in a panic to but the fuel even though we were all told on several occasions not to panic buy. There is no fuel strike planned and if it wasn't for the muppets flooding to the pumps to put fuel in their cars there wouldn't have been a shortage.

She then decided that keeping her precious fuel in a Jerry can wasn't enough she was trying to put it in a glass jar!!! WTF was she thinking?
Then did it in her kitchen whist making tea for her family, again WTF was she thinking???

I'd say she wasn't thinking at all. She sounds a bit thick to me.

Was this the lady who couldn't get her fire to light so put some petrol on from a jerry can and it spilt on the carpet so when she lit the fire it flared up and burnt her.? Or was that someone else (in the south)

Nope, this is the woman who was tipping petrol from a jerry can into a glass jug for her daughter, near a lit gas cooker.

Daft bint! No one's fault but her own.

Having said that, many years ago I was on a little Indonesian island, which had a filling station at either end, and a fair few potholes in between ;) There were, however, lots of small roadside enterprises with 2litre coke bottles lined up at the front, which they would sell you for a few rupiah................

I love this forum! I was expecting to find loads of posts blaming the idiot advice of the Government, only to find every single post agrees with my views.:D The advice given was appalling but only a total idiot would follow it!

I hope she recovers, burns are so painful. I do wonder about people some times though? do I blame the government for this incident? no. do I think they are completely out of touch, over privileged twits? oh, yes.

Sorry but I do think of dawinism when seeing this on the news !!! however not nice for someone to get burnt like this hope she makes a full and speedy recovery... another point.. is the constant rule making and health and saftey laws and advice/guidance reducing peoples abillity to think for themselves ??????

..........

Dawinism really doesn't apply to humans. It can't do. Society protects the halfwits so that they may go on to procreate. Dawinism would weed them out and allow them to fall by the wayside. it doesn't happen, sadly! ;)

Alec.

Well, the government panicked everyone over a threat of a fuel strike/shortage, who then all went out like lemmings and bought more fuel than they can hold in their vehicle (forgetting common sense and safty issues of handling and storing flammable liquids). This led to petrol stations running out of fuel much much sooner than they expected thus - leading to a fuel shortage. Hmmmmmm......

Seriously, I often wonder how some people don't forget to breathe. We're supposed to be a highly evolved species yet some people revert to basic animal instincts, despite this being self sabotage!

If the government suggested to people we all ought to kill each other, would murderers have a viable excuse?
