Over the years I have known several women farriers ,and with one notable exception ,They have out done the "yee-haw I'm a cowboy" males in this area ! I have employed one woman as an assistant for over 12 years now and never a regret . So , yes women can be farriers. Brute strength is not really needed , A clever mind and good eye , plus work ethic mean more than anything else .
I trained as a farrier... Loved it.. just couldnt afford the apprenticeship. Its not a mans career and a hell of a lot of horses benefit from a quiet women handler.
I'd imagine that women would make good farriers, although I have never met one (yet) I used to go to alot of yards to fit saddles where the horse I am trying to look at is scared of men and I can't get near it, let alone look at it's saddle but all the women at the yard can handle the horse with no problems, same must apply to horses being shod surely?
I think that horses sense that women on the whole are more gentle and less threatening, my opinion but not necessarily anyone elses before you all jump on me!

Yes my farrier has had two female apprentices and one who is now fully trained and the other still training, both are fantastic nd rather than usibg brute strength to sort out an difficult one the have used there brain to fix the situation. my horse is total fidget and where as the boys would tell him off the girls both give him something else to think about so he stands pefectly for them.
I am sure it will change and there will be alot more women in the trade soon, after all, there's loads of woman saddlers now yet years ago it was a closed shop and lads only, when I trained in 1987 there were more women than men learning and we were out numbered by at least 5 to 1 !

My old farrier was a woman, she handled my horses beautifully and was very good at her job. Mind you she said when she went to farrier conferences, the blokes didn't quite know what to make of her, but then she drunk them under the table and she was accepted as one of the 'boys'!
