Women's pentathlon

But without knowing the standard of World MP events, this could be the best they ever ride. I bet their World Champs arn't held in the same way WEG is organised for a start.

So many armchair critics about a sport most people don't really know that much about...
I don't think anyone is saying that what they're doing is easy but from what they're saying in the commentary this is the standard format of the riding section of MP, i.e. unknown horse, limited time and practise jumps. It shouldn't come as a surprise, so why isn't jumping/ riding as many different horses as possible not included as part of their training? My ability to ride different horses (aside from my overall riding ability) well was certainly higher when I was taking lessons during Uni, normally on different horses each week than now when I mainly just ride my mare.

And if you are representing your country at the Olympics you should probably have that skill then....

But they're NOT true riders - they're having to be the best in 5 very different sports and given the cost of riding and training, I bet for the lesser nations, it comes way day on their priority list. It's a hard enough skill for people who have been riding for years, let alone a multi discipline athlete as such.

You rarely see a bad GB Pent rider because a lot of them come through the Pony Club...

Yesterday's horses were saints, today's are hotter and showing the poor riding up much more. This is not a safe or sensible competition. :(

ETA Not the Hungarian girl, she was a nice rider who made an unlucky mistake.

For the lesser equestrian nations - cost will be an issue. From what I do know about MP, the funding in the UK really isn't as good as it could be, let alone if you're from somewhere like an Eastern European country.

You can train to run and swim anywhere, fencing, shooting and riding much less so...

i agree with you sare_bear that this clearly isnt the favourite event of some pentathaletes .i totally understand what ur saying but strangling these horses isnt the same as a poor throw in javelin!!

NOR is it enjoyable watching. ive actually turned it off. id hate to see the state of some of the horses mouths.

All I'm saying is that on top of being on an unfamiliar horse, most likely used to being ridden in a much different style to how the athlete rides, and very few of them being natural horse people- they have just done a swim and done fencing matches. They must all be knackered.

I'm just trying to imagine The GreyDonkey doing this . . . and failing. So these horses are truly, truly genuine.

Loving this skewbald - Over the Odds . . . I'd take him home.

I'm sure if they're aiming for the Olympics they work as hard as they can to improve in every discipline ... they've certainly got a lot more guts than me! :p

It's not easy to hop on a strange horse and jump a four foot course unless it's something you do all the time - they might only be riding once or twice a week if they need to fit in running, swimming, shooting, fencing and working full time ...

Love the coloured thats just been and the chesnut before :D Is the coloured the one that some one who posted earlier knows? I think I want to steal him!
