Vet determined that casts would not be needed and determined it was a selenium deficiency from the womb.
We are very lacking in selenium in our soil in this area and most pregnant mares should be supplimented to prevent leg deformaties. The woman did have licks with selenium in them but the mare must not have absorbed enough.

Guess what the treatment is?........................

A $5 shot of selenium and time

He said drastic improvement will happen in 3 days time and continue to get better.

he was not at all concerned as the foal is up on his hooves and thinks all will be well with him

what a wonderful day

Great news Jade.

Isn't it amazing how something so simple and cheap to remedy can cause such obvious deformities such as the little guy's foreleg?

Bless him. I saw his picture yesterday. He's a cutie!

I spoke with the animal control officer last night and gave him all of the info. He said he may not make it there today and will contact me as soon as he does.

I have heard through the grapevine that he is not the most "on top of thsngs" officer . I have been told I may need to keep on them and if nothing gets done I will have to badger the Sheriff.

Either way I will not forget them and make sure something is done

I'm pleased for you....that the 'tiddler' will be OK.....Erm, read the replies to your post last night...you appeared to have

I was thinking of putting a nice futon in the barn for when I go over for sleepovers

I decided to buy us a pure cotton duvet with synthetic fill . I was not sure if he may be allergic to pure goose down.

Didn't want to upset his delicate condition

I am so pleased for you! I read your previous post and saw the pictures of his bowed leg. Brilliant that it is such a simple solution. Please let us all know how he gets on - he is such a cutie

I didn't read the first post, where you discovered the minis (or whatever) as I am getting too upset by things I can't do anything about. I am really heartened that once again you are stepping into the rescue and a little more suffering eased. I have said this before - the world needs more people like you.

Here's some info on the problems these little guys have - much of them treatable. Good luck with all of this project Jade.

I still think you might be short-changing him a bit. Haven't you seen the pony who goes for a burger in his own car and has his own bed with covers?

That was a wonderful link. His back feet looked alot like the middle pic (although not as bad)

I have also read that they have a huge mortality rate for the newborn foals (as well as miscarriage) Anyone who breeds them is really taking on alot imo.

Hi Jade,

That's good news about the foal, such a relief for everyone concerned. Does he have a name?

Not really relevant but I thought I'd show a photo of a mini foal (born on my back lawn!) that I had a while back. Must have been a fair while, my daughter is 12 now! This little thing was 18" high when she was born and a Madam from the very start, She's only about a week old in the picture.

Hi Mairi
I'm not meaning to give Jade_Wisc a hard time. I think we should be able to voice our opinions (or should that be text?) on a forum civilly....
I'm now thinking of setting up a business selling furniture for horses...
