Wont come out of stable!!

Just wondered if anyone has heard of a pregnant mare (she is currently 328 Days) who refuses point blank to come out of her stable 24/7 and this has been going on now for well over a week now. She keeps waxing up then going off the boil, mucus plug came out on Monday morning first thing but still no sign of the foal. I understand maybe she feels secure in there as its her first foal but any advise would be greatly appreciated please!!

make sure she is really comfy in the stable and leave her to it - maybe pin the door open if your yard allows and let her come and go as she pleases!

I know when I was expecting my first baby I would have happily lived at the hospital for the week leading up to the birth

, as I felt safe there and was so worried about not making it to the hospital on time when in labour. So I can't blame your mare for not wanting to leave to safe confines of her stable. As Bex says, keep her comfy and leave her to it.

It unusual, but if she is happy in there, leave her to it.

The only other suggestion is to try to back her out if it becomes necessary, otherwise leave her be.

I would be inclined to speak to the vet regarding her waxing up and mucus plug for reassurance if nothing else.

Good luck and let us know how she gets on. x

I would call the vet and speak to them and ask about what she's doing on the phone, has her back end softened yet? The vet's are usually happy to help with these things as they know once foal is born they'll get a call out fee

My vet came to check her just to reassure me! Yes softened just waiting but he says in good health etc so leave her if thats where she wants to be! I have managed to get her out to stretch her legs down the yard and back but she was pulling me to get back!! Will keep you all updated thanks x
