My cob doesn't like one of her back legs touching. I have had her nearly two years and she is ok now to have her hooves picked out and will let me wash it occasionally. My problem is she won't let me trim that leg. She kicks out as soon as I approach with the scissors. I have tried different ideas but still a NO. She is brilliant to clip except for the legs so I trim with scissors. When I first got her she had to be sedated and we managed to clip her legs but it was touch and go as she could still kick even when sedated. Any ideas??

Minto used to be excellent to clip but I never could clip his legs. Only ever tried for scanning tendons though so perhaps an element of pain. Cob at work was exactly the same but grew such hairy feathers she needed clipped every 3 weeks. I hated it by owner wanted her twitched so I could do them. Robin hates his ears being trimmed so I just don’t do it as he is great with everything else.

However yours being a cob I would wonder about scabby legs under the feather which hurts so she dosnt want legs touched.

Can you run hands over the leg safely? If so, it might be serious sallenders/mallEnders. My cob’s skin cracked one year. I now make sure his legs are oiled weekly so it doesn’t happen again. He has very pink sensitive skin. I just squirt it on from the bottle-baby oil, then make sure it’s rubbed in.

She was shabby when I first got her but all pain free now.

It takes them a long time to forget pain. I've had my beloved cob almost 16 years. When he came to us he had been twitched on the ear (not legal in the UK) to clip his legs. He is one of "those" cobs. He has mallenders and sallenders, and mud fever. The thing is - he is right. Sometimes it does hurt to clip his legs. But I still have to for his welfare. With a lot of work we have got a routine down so I can mostly do most of him without ACP. But there are times when it just helps take the edge off for him. Its a never ending cycle. You don't do it because he objects - so the coat grows longer - so the underlying condition gets worse - so it hurts more - so he objects more.

Sounds like she is still expecting pain. They can really hurt. Do you have someone who can help and slowly slowly tempt with treats and do a tiny bit at a time followed by lots of praise.
