Looking for help I'm thinking of changing to a wood pellet bed. I'm currently using hunters shavings but I'm going through them so quick the last lot I brought seem a little sub standard and just don't last as long as they had been! Horse is currently in at night as he's recovering from psd!

Which pellets would you recommend to go on rubber mats and any tricks and tip with using them?

Open to other suggestions!!

I use white horse platinum plus too. I find them to be very good. I've got a discount code if you want it. Just pm me.

Another vote for platinum plus...and a corn broom for sweeping on the mats. Fynalite fork for mucking out.

As above, i have noticed white horse last significantly longer than other brands. I treat them differently to a lot of people as i do a full muck out every day, just personal preference, i also prefer to have most of my pellets 'activated' ie add plenty of water (boiling water is super quick) but again over time you decide how best to manage it

White Horse Platinum Plus. I have used Verdo and there is no comparison.

Currently I have one bed on top of mats and one straihht onto concrete. Both work well.

The one on mats I dig the wet out a couple if times a week.
The one on concrete, I keep a solid wet layer as a base and skim off the wet. Both get a fresh bag a week (sometimes more in winter. Both pelleted areas are about 12 x 6ft (pony beds).

It is my saviour. I save huge amounts of time and money.

Proviso .. I did have a very wet and messy pony on wood pellet. Not good! These too are reasonably clean.

I use the platinum pellets under shavings, just put a bag where he pees, really cut down my shavings bill and shavings help keep the dust down, great combination imo

If you do a search on here for wood pellet bedding or search through my started threads from about 4 years ago...you'll find a thread I did as an experiment on different brands and methods of mucking out.

Method wise...experiment yourself as different people have different preferences but as for the brand...Platinum Plus all the way and so you make sense of the other thread...it used to be sold as Five Star Bedding.

I still use it and it's actually an even better product than it used to be.

cut an X in the flat side, fold back Vs inwards and add half a bucket of water to each bag. I love wood pellets! They can get a bit dusty in the summer but just damp down with a sprinkler if they do.

I use a mix of pellets and shavings over mats, with the pellets where horse is most likely to pee (mares - in the banks, geldings - in the middle).

I pour a kettle of boiling water on a full sack of pellets which fluffs them beautifully...
