Wood pellet bedding - numpty question

I put a bag of pellets in a big tub trug, and jst cover them with water, then a few hours later they have more than doubled, tip them on the bed, I usually put them around the baunks. Sometimes they are a bit damp, but they soon dry out. Hope this helps? Kate .

Or even easier and curtesy of the amazing pellets instruction thread someone on here did recently, lay the bag down flat on the bed, cut a x or u shape and pour on half a bucket of water.... Leave for 20-30 mins then empty and spread. I so wish I'd read the thread in Autumn rather than recently! I'd been adding dry (as in pellet directions) and it was pretty rubbish tbh- now I'm well away ;) think its a thread by GG or something similar

I take the corner off the bag cover with water and tip bag onto its side and leave to absorb whilst mucking out then tip across the end of stable and leave by the time i come back in evening they are all fluffed up and i quickly spread in- simplezzzzzz :D

I only damp the first bed so it's still crunchy but by the morning, most of it has been broken down by the horse moving around on it. After that I only add dry pellets when I'm topping up as they break down easily.

Another who only waters new beds, after that they go in dry which helps to keep the bed nice and light & dry.
Only exception is in hot dry weather when I soak fresh pellets

I love this bedding and now have all 4 of my horses on it, the only thing i dont really like is the dis-colouring that happens quicky (maybe mine just really messy on it!) but other than that i love it and makes my bedding bills very cheap!!! Anyone else have it discolour quick? x

I am on the Liverpool Wood pellets. I know my boys are very messy horses (as in walk around lol) my girls are on it and are mush cleaner and beds stay cleaner for longer too x

My beds are alot smaller then this, I am worried i will waste it laying a big bed. He started off with a nice very good size bed but he trashes it!!!! I think I will make his bed bigger and see!!! But his messer then what you picture showed of your horse!!! I would love it if my horse was that clean!! lol x

I should have had the video showing the whole process....under that bed are about six more poos all scattered around, lol. She is a messy madam.

I do a partial soak of the pellets I add as it still leaves plenty of whole pellets, but the ones that break down just seem to keep it light and fluffy.

Thanks for the positive feedback on that thread...I wanted it to be helpful, so I am glad it was :-)

Not wanting to hijack the post at all but does anyone use wood pellets with straw?

My horse is stabled in a very old barn and the floor sort of dips slightly in the centre of the stable... which is typically where my horse also wee's! I have rubber mats down which does help to level but I find with straw that the wee tends to puddle in one spot then it ruins the straw and I have a lot of wastage even from my horse just doing one wee.

He is generally turned out 24/7 but does come in once or twice a day for a feed/ rest/ eat extra haylage/ groom etc and he does have the odd night in.

I have thought about putting some shavings underneath the straw where he wee's (tends to wee in same spot so rest of bed remains relatively clean)

Having seen all these threads about wood pellets would these work instead? could I just put whole pellets underneath the straw to soak up wee or would they just get trampled round when he walks round his box or am I better soaking them?

Tempted to get a bag to give it a go!

In your situation, I would just pop a bag of dry pellets down on that area alone and leave it there. Lay straw over the top and take a look under the straw every few days :-)

Thanks =)

My local feed merchant sells them so will ask him to bring a bag next time I order feed and see how I get on!

I almost changed to wood pellets a few years ago but wimped out lol
