Hello,

Horse is currently on big straw bed but find I take a ridiculous amount of time mucking him out. Deep litter in the week and then full muck out at the weekend. I'm looking at swapping to wood pellets but do you need rubber matting under them? Don't currently have any but can get some if needed. Also what does everyone think of the wood pellets as a bedding? I will miss my huge straw bed though!

I am looking at using wood pellet bedding as I have an asthmatic pit pony for a horse at the moment, been looking at these

I'm on wood pellets and very pleased with them but do use them with rubber mats. But I'm sure they would be fine without although you would probably need to put more in. The bedding is very absorbent, easy to muck out and doesn't take much room to store. I use White Horse Energy which seemed to be the best price at the time.
 
I use wood pellets for my mare because she is disgusting... I have them on top of mats, however I didn't at our old yard but I did keep the bed a lot thicker for her. I take the wet out every day, but didn't with my last pony, think it depends on the horse!
 
Wood pellets for us on rubber matting, been using them for years and love them. I order by the palletload from white horse energy ... I use their platinum brand. The mininshetland just gets poo removed everyday and then has the whole lot dug out end of spring but the big lad has his wet removed approx once a week. Would never go back to shavings again.

I use it on a concrete floor.
About 6 inches thick.
Have a fairly clean but wet boy.
Use platinum plus Pellets - which have been the best so far!

Don't get me wrong.. Big straw bed it looks lovely but normally smells like a muckheap. I can go to the shop after mucking out on the Pellets :D

How many bags did you use to make your bed? Agree with the smelling after a full muck out! Special in the warmer months 😷
 
I’ve used wood pellets for years, some pellets are more adsorbent and agree white horse are good. Not a problem either way if you lay it down on concrete or rubber mat. It’s better with rubber because you can use less product as a base, on concrete you need a lot more product. I prefer to skip out most days and tackle the wet at weekends. Easy to bank up too.
 
Ive done banks with pellets, Its really not that difficult. You can take the wet out or as a lot of people do leave it. I usually take it out but its nice that if i'm ever in a massive rush i can just leave it in for a day without it getting rank.
I rate pellets very highly....unless, as i did this winter you have a really dirty box walker as the bits of poo get so tiny and dried out that you just cant pick them out and the whole bed turns a horrible shade of brown!
Concrete or mats are purely personal choice. Yes you need more with no mats as you would any bedding however i think they work best and are most economical with a good firm base anyway.

- I tried Aquamax last winter and tbh didn't notice them to be a huge amount better than average (white horse or LWP) especially not if you take the huge cost difference into account.
5 Star have been the best by far I've used so far, now available from Eden products.
 
Tried wood pellets - expensive and a PITA - and bad on the muck heap. Moved to straw pellets - cheaper and easier - but still costly. Back to straw - yes, the muckheap gets bulkier but it breaks dwn quickly. Straw looks better, keeps horses cleaner - and costs a LOT less.
 
Sorbeo are great, I love them. I found Liverpool wood pellets a bit dusty, Verdo was ok. Much easier than straw or shavings, but shavings look nicer. I would say don't skrimp on what you put down, as I find if my bed is small I waste more than if it's bigger (not sure why!) x
 
My preferred bedding method is a thick layer of pellets topped with a full bed of straw. Managed on a semi deep litter basis.
That way you get the benefits of both, plus don't get the dust associated with pellets
