Hi,
I’ve just ordered a pallet of wood pellet bedding for my rather disgusting cob and pony. Do people have any issues with wood pellets? I’ve never used them before but I was recommended to try them with the cob being really wet. He’s in a 12x10 stable how many bags do people tend to use? I’m hoping he’s going to be cleaner. Does anyone swear by them? There not very popular on my yard(tend to use shavings) thanks in advance!

They are amazing! They are the best bedding I have used. They don't move and are so absorbent. I ran out and so I went onto Miscanthus which is nowhere near as good. My mare is on rubber mats so only needs a small amount bedding and wood pellets have definitely been the best. A tip: When you water them down, make sure that the water has room to drain away. I used to fill my wheel barrow up with the pellets and the put the water in but the pellets became too wet and unabsorbent. Now I put them on the floor and spray the water on them and wait until the fluff up. I am so going back onto them when I get through the Miscanthus!

My mare ate any that had retained their shape, she even used to dig through the bed to get them, she was in ad lib fodder and was not particularly greedy but obviously anything shaped like a pellet must have been delicious.

They’re much more absorbing than shavings. You need to put a good few bags down first if you want a decent bed but then you just top up after that.

They are great for a wet horse. The thicker the bed the better I find. It may seem a lot to start with but you’ll find you use much less as time goes on and you won’t need to lift the wet every day.

They are good, just take a bit of getting used too. I put down 8 -10 bags to start. I lay them out on floor cut a cross in bags and add about half a bucket of water, you can use hot water too which makes them swell up more. leave them for about half hour then tip out of bags and spread with a rake.
Just remove poo daily and wet once or twice a week. if gets dusty just add water. I add one or two bags a week

Currently using straw pellets, I’m not allowed wood (but may pop the odd bag in from time to time ;). )
I love pellets in general, wood I prefer.
I find them super easy to muck out. I do wet mine to add as I find they eat them.
I do think they are fab for horses who are wet but clean, I once used them on a box Walker and it was horrific! The pellets dehydrated the poo so with the walking it crumbled to millions of tiny bits making mucking out impossible.
Current 3 on it are quite tidy so it’s easy to scoop the poo off the top, level it out and job done.
My proper horse I think may be too dirty to use pellets but am going to give it a try this week as my mucking out time is quartered as is the smell (compared to straw!)
