wood pellet questions

saw the aquamax stand at Burghley yesterday and have lots of questions.

Firstly, i am very prissy about my horses having clean beds - if it doesn't look clean enough for me to sit in it - my horses won't be laying their heads in it. As you can guess, this means beds lifted every day and all wet out. Can it be managed by using a watering can rather than p*ssy bedding?

Does it rot down as quickly as the manufacturers claim. This is vital as i am currently using bedmax which takes forever.

How about dust? The fluffed stuff looked a bit like saw dust. Both horses have sensitive chests so bedding does need to be as dust free as possible.

Have tried paper - this works great under the bed max, but too easily blown about to want to use it for a full bed.

I do have large thick rubber mats.

Thanks

taken the plunge and this year moving to wood pellets.
I have thick rubber mats and for the last 6 years used equizorp or aubiouse .This is now around £8 a bag!
I have researched wood pellets and a lot of people rate them .I have had some delivered and it has worked out at 5.50 a bag . It seems I wood add at the same rate as equzorb or less so evn if I use the same amount there is already a saving.
My researc seems to say quick rotting and not dusty .I will see how I go and will post on here once I have started winter proper.
i used this company and found them very helpful
plus a lot of interesting info on their website

They can be very dusty when moved, when I brush my bed up in the morning there is a cloud of sawdust but that settles and doesn't rise again. TBH, I don't think you'd like them as they will be even more dusty if you take out the wet every morning. I can vouch for the fact that the bed doesn't smell of wee, it smells like a lumberyard even after a week of wee.

Every morning, there is a patch of damp and I rake the bed about to mix it in. Come evening, the bed is light again where the pellets have soaked up the dampness.

You barely take any bedding out when mucking out, it's all poo.

I really like them. My boy pees for Scotland and the bed doesn't smell. I lift out the worst of the wet and mix any damp bedding through and leave it to dry out. Has worked out much cheaper (and faster!) than shavings. You hardly take out any bedding so muck heap will be much smaller

I notice the bags are only 10 kilo .The ones I use are 15 kilo and price included vat and delivery I only add 1 bag a week not 2/3 as with the smaller bags so happy with the price

Thanks everyone

I'm going to see if i can get a single bag and have a play with it.

OH very keen - getting fed up of building more muck heap bays!

if your in kent i can sell you a few bags x

Thanks for the offer, but I'm a bit far.

I've been to Tesco and got a bag of their wood pellet cat litter.

Tbh, if it can cope with what my cats do in the litter tray, a stable will be no problem.

Can I advise you not to use cat litter for your horse? Not on a long term basis anyway.

For one thing, it is a very expensive way of buying horse bedding, but more importantly wood pellet cat litter is made from wood flour. This is wood ground up as fine as flour you bake with. Proper wood pellets made for horse bedding should be dust free for health reasons.

The most local to you are in Lingfield. I pick mine up from there, but they deliver too. PM me for details.

No, haven't tried putting it in a stable. Its in the cats litter tray. Just thought cats pee is the best possible test of how a bedding deals with urine.

Discovered local feed shop sells aquamax so I have also got a bag of that to play with.
