Morning all,

My friend has suggested using wood pellets under my straw bed and I was hoping for some reviews on them and the best brand to use.

I have heard of a few people using them and having good results. Due to work I am not usually up the stables until rather late so hoping this may mean I have more time with my boy as they should result in an easier muck out!

Thank you in advance!

I love wood pellets for making a speedier muck out :)

I find it really quick to just scoop the droppings off daily and then take the wet out when it comes to the surface. My mares tend to pee in the same place so it's easy to dig out a small bit and fill the hole with unsoaked pellets.

I really rate White Horse Energy Platinum Plus, they are really light in colour and very absorbent, but I have used other brands in the past which have been fine.

If you want a discount code then JorRac16144 will get you some money off your first order :)

Absolutely love wood pellets!! As MP said mucking out is so much quicker i can muck out my two in under 10 mins and it all fits in 1 wheelbarrow. I was taking 3 wheelbarrows a day out of my straw bed as my gelding is awfully messy however i now only take 1/2 a wheel barrow a day out and that's just poo's!
The best thing is that it doesn't smell like straw does, nothing worse that that pee straw smell
Your muck out time will be crazily reduced!! I take out the wee every 2/3 days as mine wee in the same place so like MP just dig a hole out and refill.

Defo give them a try, i will never go back to straw! :p

Ah brilliant to hear! I know a few people who only use the wood pellets and others who use it along side straw.

Would you both only use wood pellets?

I personally would only use wood pellets as my two thrash the straw bed around the stable and dig it up so it's awfully messy! I wonder if it would all get a bit messy if your horse walks around or whatever as the straw wouldn't stay sitting on top and would be harder to muck out.
Also I hate the wee straw smell however the pellets should soak up the wee so you wouldn't necessarily have that smell.
Some people say wood pellets don't look cozy as a bed, but mine have their beds pretty thick probably around 6 inches, have banks and it's lovely and soft. Mine lie down pretty much every night, i think they enjoy it ;)

I am quite luck with my stable as he is never shut in, he has a pen out the front so the bed doesn't tend to be moved much!

I may try under my straw to start with and see how i get on! :D Very excited to have a shorter mucking out time! Hoping it will give me more time to ride, which I am sure my boy will not be impressed at ;)

I don't really like mixing them with other bedding as I really like being able to just scoop the droppings off the top, which would be harder if you had straw as well.
But other people do use them together and are quite happy :)

The only downside to wood pellets really is the aesthetics. Once you're over that, they are the best! Easy to do, no smell, lovely dry bed for the horse to lie on. I wouldn't mix them with any other bedding, especially if you are looking for the time saving advantage. I use Brites, possibly because they are made just down the road, but they are better than other varieties I've tried.

I think the advantage of using pellets underneath a straw bed would be if you deep littered....

If you muck out every day there might not be much time saving, but if you only mucked out the pellet bit once a month or whenever the wet came up to the surface then I think that would work well, and give an lovely deep comfy bed.

I use whichever ones I find for the cheapest price. Other than colour (which I don't care about one bit) I honestly haven't found any differences between any of the makes I've tried.

I use them under shavings for my mare, so much cleaner than what used to greet me everyday, I'd be taking 2 barrowfuls out daily and putting in 2-3 bags of shavings a week.
Now it's only a barrowful on the days I take out the wet & just add a bag of shavings & a bag of pellets a week. And only takes 10-15mins!

I also loved my wood pellet stables and if I stabled again it would be my bedding of choice. Only downsides are that they can get dusty in the summer if they dry out and I found it better to use a fork designed for a pellet bedding rather than a standard shavings fork though that might just be me!
I had a friend who used it as the foundation of a deep litter bed and it worked very well for her also.
