I am on my 4th week of a wood pellet bed, my stables are an earth floor so it drains

So the pro side is very nice free draining bed, but where he pees isn't solid enough to dig out, but is getting a bit whiffy!

I was thinking of some dettol and watering where he pees so it smells a bit nicer

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem??

the earth floor prob isn't helping matters.
i make 'disinfectant' with essential oils mixed with water. there are a few oils which are anti-biotic, anti-viral, etc etc, and so will kill off the nasty bacteria which are making it stinky, and make it smell nice again. ones to go for are lemon, mandarin (both cheap for big bottles) Red Thyme, Clove, Lavender, Patchouli. i use about 3 at a time, about 6-10 drops of each in a 2L coke bottle full of water.

Always take the bulk bit of the wet bit out, and scrape back the edges to air and dry, while horse is in field. Replace with new wetted pellets, though with an earth bed rather than concrete and mats you'll always have problems, I guess.

I had this problem, I found i was taking out so much of the wet that there was hardly bed left, in the end I switched to woodypet, I take the sopping wet bits out and mix the rest in and the is no smell.

My problem is that I don't have any wet as it is drying from underneath, so would be taking out fluffy usable pellet material that does whiff a bit. I caved and used a spade to remove a bit, but I think the essential oil is the way to go!

On the bright side I'm 4 weeks in and haven't had to add any more pellets as nothing coming out!

Stablezone powder is good - if my stables gets a bit wiffy I sprinkle some onto the mats and the pellets themselves - it gets rid of the amonia. Not that expensive and you don't need a lot.

I use Jeyes Dustbin powder on my smelly patches (smelly stable patches that is!
