Is this a bad idea?

Looking to cut costs this winter. Have a messy horse who likes to drag his bedding around in the stable. He has a small bed (enough for him to wee on) to discourage him digging up the banks (and he has mats)

Wood pellets look like they could work out cheaper, but have heard mixed things about using them with messy horses?

I use Sorbeo wood pellets with my messy mare. 1 to 2 bags a week then a bit of normal shavings on top. She doesnt drag her bed around but she is very wet so the wood pellets are very absorbant. I dig the whole lot out once a week and skip out the other days.

I wouldn't recommend them for a little square to pee on, but they're very good as a half bed with messy tiddly horses. Mine is on wood pellets only, they're lovely to muck out and as long as you have enough bed, I start with 6 x 15kg bags and add two bags every two weeks taking the wet out at the same time, they work very well.

Do it. Steer clear of Verdo though. Best thing I ever did, mine is an ultra messy and box walks and its the only bedding that doesn't make me want to cry when I muck out and I have tried everything. She does have mats underneath due to the box walking.

Another not Verdo vote!

I agree with everyone above! My horse is reasonably clean but ive used pellets on my daughters less lovely in the stable horse and its ok, he scattered poo which used to be a bit difficult then to remove easily. However is was no easier to remove on shavings or any other bed I tried so it made little difference in the ease of mucking out but the money saved was far better.
You do need a reasonable sized bed as the wet will disappear under leaving the top nice and dry. A small pellet bed seems not really to work at all.

I have a very messy gelding, tried all other bedding and he is seriously disgusting!

Wood pellets have been fantastic, would not use anything else now!

His box is rubber matted with wood pellets on top, when he is stabled I use 2-3 bags a week on an established bed.

Also would not recommend Verdo.

What's wrong with Verdo guys? Just curious. I use straw pellets, slightly cheaper than wood pellets and don't need wetting as they break down quicker.

Verdo start out brown, get browner and soak up barely any wee. The horse is standing in wet mush in double quick time.
