Does anyone use woodpellets as a base under another type of bedding??? if so what and how does it work or does it all get mixed up? At the moment I use Eco comfybed which I love and has a second usage as when I muck it out I put it down on a turn out area. I am wondering though if using wood pellets under this would make the bed more absorbant.
Alternatively if I go for just wood pellets how many bags does everyone use a week??? trying to work out if it would be significantly cheaper as only use 3/4 bag of comfybed (£6) a week/horse. If I end up putting 2 bags of woodpellets in a week then that will end up costing the same or more.

I do. Have been doing for about a year. I put 5 bags down as a base and then have a shavings top. I skip out every day, turn my banks once a week and add another bale of shavings. I only remove wet when it starts to get near the surface and then I fill the holes in with fresh pellets. I don't pre- soak the pellets - no need to. Once the whole lot gets too wet then I do a dig out and start over.

I bought a ton of pellets last year and have just had to buy another ton. A ton lasted me a year as an underbed for two horses. One is very wet and has had pellets down all year the other just has pellets autumn/winter as he is very clean and is quite dry in the summer so I found his bed was getting too dusty.

I bought my pellets cash and collected them myself so was able to get them down to £2.80/15 kg bag (inc my fuel).

Thanks ali2, so did your shavings stay dry or relatively so? with the comfy bed the wee seeps down to the bottom layer so the top is always dry. I was on shavings before and did find that the shavings got wet all the way through but if there are wood pellets underneath then this may be different?????

Shavings stay dry so long as the wet pellets are not left too long and allowed to seep up into the shavings. Its certainly a lot drier than shavings alone :)
