Have been using wood pellets and find them very good and much more economical and easy to muck out - my horse seems very clean - but in last month they have become very dusty. Started to bring my horse in in the day and he has a very ventilated stable but he has a cough - so started to soak his hay. Any tips. Not put any new ones in for ages - am i putting too much water on them when i add new - they seem to break down very quickly. I use Corley.

How much water do you put on them? TBH I just chuck them dry onto established bed.
I have one horse though that is TO clean for bedding on pellets:eek: I had to sprinkle her bed with water every day, so I put her on shavings.

I slit the bag then shove hose in till water covers pellets then leave them. Will give him a good muck out over weekend, get major wet out then mix and chuck a couple of bags of dry in.

I have found my LWP had become quite dry & dusty...so I bought a watering can and started to water them every other day if its very dry, seems to have done the trick.

I think its just a case of getting used to how damp to keep them, and the recent spate of dry humid weather hasn't helped

Mine went dusty. I ended up hosing them down.

My mare didn't wee, which i think made them turn quite dusty, but the pellets in my other mare's stable who does wee were fine.

Will give the watering can a go - love the bedding - but can't get used to wetting bedding - he used to be too wet on straw- now it is the opposite!!

Think it because the weather is so mild (or has been) lately, no moisture to absorb. I use a mixture of shavings and pellets and haven't put any clean down for ages. Horses bed is so bulky, tonnes of it, has gone a bit dark looking but is so dry even to touch. Trying to get rid of some of it to put fresh shavings on and lighten it up a bit.

It does this every summer to me. I just add extra water to the pellets so they go in almost too wet then mix through as my horse only wees in one place.

As soon as it starts raining and they come in with wet legs, it stops being so dusty.

Every now and then somebody posts a thread and their timing is brilliant!!! I am having the same problem, I'm a new convert. My new bags go down pretty dry I only sprinkle a covering of water on in a wheelbarrow and leave for the day. The watering can sounds like a plan. They're a faf but so much more economical than shavings and I easier to muck out.

When I add pellets I pop them in a wheelbarrow and hose until water is covering the pellets (over 5 litres!), which means they are wetter when you add them

Also use the watering can on the bits where he doesn't wee as they get too dry. My bed is on an earth floor, so the whole thing drains well and even straw didn't get wet, so I probably have to use more water with wood pellets than most people.

Definitely due to the long spell of dry weather!

My clean boy's bed has got very dry this past coupld of weeks so I've been using a watering can to damp it down. I add eucalyptus oil to the water as well to help repel flies and to help their breathing. Smells good too!
