Wood Pellets, help please

For most of the cheaper brands like Liverpool woodpellets and White horse bedding, etc you have to mail order and they deliver to your yard. They have minumum order quanitities. (just google them) A lot of feed places near us sell Aquamax wood pellets but they're expensive now, compared to their competition. Although if you've not tried them before it might be worth getting a few in to test before you make a bulk purchase of one of the cheaper brands.

I found them good, I used Chorleywood pellets I think it was (been over a year sorry). The lady's there were brillant and couldn't fault customer services.
The one thing I did find with the pellets were that they were time consuming to lay down, however, were extremely each to use and cut down mucking out time by loads. I would probably use it again :D

I have wood pellets on rubber matting....have found them easy to use and cost effective.

Just had a delivery via efeeds and had 20 bags delivered and some horse feed. I am definately sticking with the wood pellets as mare is very wet and this has made life so much easier.

I've used Aquamax in the past and it's fab for all but the messiest of horses - eg if you have a box walker or one who likes to mash up his bedding, then don't go there as it would get expensive. Otherwise once you've laid the bed down, it's very easy to muck as the wet doesn't need to be (and shouldn't be) taken out daily, but just once a week, when you can add a new bag if necessary. It's designed to ultra absorbant, so according to the manufacturers you shouldn't even disturb any wet patches until they get removed unless the bedding turns red, in which case it's absorbed all it can. What's more there's virtually no smell and the amount of waste is minimal compared to shavings. Round here it's about the same price as shavings at £6.50 per bag. You need rubber matting, however.

If only you were in scotland?!

My friend and I have a wood pellet business (C & S Equine Bedding Supplies) and we are cheaper than everyone else!

I have heard good and bad things about LWP but I would recommend using their Premium wood pellets. Be aware that some of the websites may say includes delivery and VAT but this could be local delivery and 5% VAT (you will need to pay 17.5% VAT)

Chellebean: The one thing I did find with the pellets were that they were time consuming to lay down.

We know this and we offer 20 bags for £50 (£2.50 each). We deliver this and set up you bed for you AND come back a week later to check you are managing!

Cost wise there is huge variation-between some brands

LWP 1 tonne (in 10 kg bags) £283 (to scotland-dont know other delivey off top of my head)

Chorley 1 tonne £259 (£10 delivery per pallet inc) £249 local delivery

Lancashire 1 tonne £265

White Horse 1 tonne £325

Aquamax 1 tonne £400 (ish)

C & S 1 tonne delivered and set up £250

Please note I have not checked these prices recently and they may have changed.

Also welsh_mare: please note that if you buy in 15kg bags you buy a ton not a tonne! 1 tonne is 1000kg and 1 ton is 990kg! Only 10kg difference but not may people seem to know this!

I used wood pellets with D and loved them, swore I'd never use another type of bedding again.

Unfortunately Lil is a dirty box walker who mashes her bed into soup so we'll be swapping back onto straw this winter.

I would choose Aquamax everytime- although it seems expensive, most people use 1 bag a week or less, so actually it works out quite cheap!

Marilyn: just wondering have you tried other wood pellets to compare to aquamax? I have never actually used aquamax so would be interested to hear how it compares if people have used, for example, LWP and aquamax and which they think is best?

The max any of our customers add to their beds is 2 bags a week which is £5, most add 0.5-1 bag working out at £1.25-£2.50 per week.

If Aquamax is £6.50/bag then you could add 2.5 (ish) bags of our wood pellets for the same price.

How much do you pay for your aquamax?

I tried a local company last year and absolutely loved them. I pay £2.00 per bag plus vat. I use shavings in the summer as they aren't in much but I will def be switching once they start coming in at night. In fact my delivery is arriving in 10 minutes.

Ive been useing Ecomax wood pellets as local tack shop stocks them and cant get loads in as it's only me useing them. Had thought of trying others just not sure as it might not work out the same as Ecomax ones. If I buy 10 bags I get them £6.50 a bag a 15kg bag.

Hi, I did a lot of searching for the cheapest wood pellet bedding and I found that 'dust free horse bedding' were the cheapest for me (I'm based in Kent). I didn't notice a difference between this and aquamax except the price!

I used to use wood pellets (now moved yards and straw is included).
I used Aquamax and liked them however they were getting expensive and there were other options much cheaper.
We then tried another make (i think it was bio something) and found they weren't as good.
They were much dustier (mare with copd started getting symptoms again) and my friend ended up watering them every day to keep her symptoms under control.
Also found they weren't as absorbent- didn't fluff up as much and got smelly quicker.

Thanks for all the replies, will have to have a good look round and find if there are any (extra) delivery charges, as we are as far west in wales as you can go!, it's great but sometimes people don't like coming this far.

Definately want to try them and the fact they take up less storage is a big bonus as on our yard now i don't have as much storage space as our old yard.

criso: thanks for that. Part of me wants to buy some aquamax so I can compare it myself but to do it properly I would need to do a whole bed I think and it seems a bit silly when we have tonnes of it sitting!

Liverpool Wood Pellets all the way.

Order online. Pay by paypal. Take delivery. Throw 8 bags down. Throw a bucket of water at them (if I can be bothered). Muck out (5 mins a horse). Throw 2 bags down a week. Go off and spend the time and money I saved somewhere else.

Simples.

I used Liverpool wood pellets. Thisnk they are great but very dusty this time of year, so have gone back to shavings for time being

The one thing I did find with the pellets were that they were time consuming to lay down,:D

How on earth is opening 8 bags of pellets and damping them time consuming? It takes twice as long to bash open a bag of shavings or shake up a bale of straw properly, the last thing you'd say about pellets is consuming time. This is my third year now, I won't change back in a hurry, they are economical, very quick and simple to use, take less space on the muck heap and the horses love them; what more can you ask for - except a nicer colour, that's what I found hardest to adapt to, the brown colour!
:)

:)

I remember once spending TWO HOURS hand crumbling three bags of really posh shavings (in my defence I was a student with only one horse).

If anyone is concerned by dust from wood pellets - can I mention that I have a severe dust allergy and asthma (broken winded with sweet itch!).

A bale of straw makes me ill but I have never found the dust from over-dry wood pellets to set me off.

I have experienced more dust from shavings than from pellets, even tho I rarely bother to wet them. (I have to say shavings dust doesn't set me off either).

If I find my beds getting a bit dry I just flick the water from my drinkers over them.

I love them, have used them for 2 years now and they are so much quicker and easier to muck out, less waste in teh muck heap, less smell and doesnt stick to rugs like shavings :) I buy mine from Liverpool Wood Pellets and have been very happy with the quality and fast delivery times :)
