I've been looking into wood pellets but they always seem to be used with rubber matting. I don't have mats - can they still be used directly onto a concrete floor?

Yes absolutely, as long as you have them deep enough they are fine, I find they move less than shavings/straw etc so are fine on a concrete floor. My youngster has them on a concrete floor and he never goes down to the concrete, I just have a couple of rubber mats at the front where he stands eating his hay.
