Help im getting confused. I'm using wood shavings at the moment but will need to reorder soon and am wondering if wood pellets would be a better ,more economical option. i've never used them before but the ads sound good. The prices seem very variable and so i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on its pros and cons and who they would recomend buying it from. Many many thanks

they are cheaper, and i've been pretty impressed by them so far. very absorbent, low-level dust, you put the pellets down about 1" deep then water them (i use a watering can with warm water fwiw), then i water again about 5 mins later, and they all fluff up. using 2-3 bags per week per stable, but my girls are in about 19 hours a day at the moment so they'd use quite a bit of any bedding type.

I'd agree with kerilli, I am also impressed with wood pellets. We've been on them for about two years and certainly find them cheaper and good quality. Plus, due to the cost I'm not worried about putting fresh bedding down.
I have very dirty boys and find them absorbing and good at keeping the smell down.

I'd disagree and have gone back to shavings. We're not on rubber mats so need a thick base. It only stayed put in the places she wee'd and shed drag her feet through the rest. Friend has a very wet mare and her bed ended up disgusting.

My whole yard is on wood pellets. We've worked out that once there is a good bed down, you can mix the dry pellets in where they wee and this makes for a drier bed and the pellets last longer. No need to take the wet out every day as it doesn't pong. For soaking I put 2 1/2 - 3 buckets of pellets in the wheelbarrow, 1 bucket of water, leave for about 20mins and then tip it straight over in the stable, and then any wetter bits soak onto the drier pellets which are at the bottom (if you get me). Very easy to maintain, and quick and easy to muck out. I have very large horses so know all about mega wees and poos!!

Many thanks everyone, on balance it seems worth a try, are LWP safe or are they cheap because they aren't as absorbant or contain toxic material. thanks again

Stinky was on shavings - 1 - 11/2 bags a week and Farra was on 2 - 3 bags of megazorb a week on her mats.

Stinky is now also on mats and uses 1 - 2 15k bags of LWP and Farra needs 2 - 3 bags a week.

They actually cope with that big piddly mare and she is fairly dry on them.

Very quick to muck out - I take out the poo and if the wet has got to the surface, quick dig out of that spot. Stinky normally has the wet out at weekends, and Farra twice a week needs wet out.

I put the pellets in a tub and pre-water or lay them down and use the hosepipe. I water them so they are just starting to break down but have a solid core and then add some dry ones to the damp ones as this for mine is the best solution.

I am saving £10 - £15 a week on bedding, less work and they are clean and dry so for me, they work very well and help the pocket.

Yep, I use them they're great and prob the cheapest on the market right now.

My last Manco ones were £165 plus 5% VAT a tonne.
I like them, but as they also do recycled wood pellets you do need to say only virgin wood will suit your needs.

My yard love the Natures Best wood pellet, its available from Chorley (euxton) and they deliver all over for you!
There good under shavings to if you didnt want to completely change your bedding type..good for the wet etc!
