Wood Pellets

I have been looking at using wood pellets this coming winter. The claims made by the suppliers appeal to me as they are cheaper, make a better more absorbent bed, are available in bulk and are used with in a ratio of 12kg of pellets to a bag of shavings.


Has anyone any views on these claims having used wood pellets.

I've used them, used to buy from Liverpool pellets who were really good, I now buy from a local supplier who works out about 5p a bag more expensive but I'm supporting a local business.
They were great for my mare who is really quite wet, I put a bag a week down on the bottom of the bed and put the old stuff over the top and allow it to swell itself, other I know put the bag in a tubtrug and half fill with water and then go back and put over the bed once broken down.
I have in the last year also been using a bag of shavings a week mainly because she had really bad Cushings induced laminitus and was on box rest, have now gone back to just pellets, much cheaper, not as much taken out.
My mare is also on rubber matting in case that makes a difference.

Wood Pellets are excellent, especially if you have rubber mats too. I am a recent convert as I couldn't quite get my head around wetting them! However, I'd be reluctant to use anything else now, as they are so quick to muck out & so little is wasted.

I use the tubtrug method to top up the bed. Even quicker if you use a kettle!

However, I'm not sure a 12kg bag equals a bale of shavings, I'd say you'd need a bit more.
