hi
i know this has been done to death but i,m tryting to figure out how much to order for two horses for six months , i usually use wood shavings and go through a 3 bales per week for the two but have no idea howq much i will use

Well a tonne is 67 15kg bags or 100 10 kg bags. I use almost 3 bags per horse per week but that is quite excessive and most people get away with half of that. Three of my horses are extremely messy and are the ones that use up most of the bedding. I used to use 2 - 3 bales of shavings a week when I used them and so I reckon that however many bales of shavings you use, you will use approx the same number of 15 kg bags of wood pellets. So in your case, a tonne should last you around five months.

I used 2 x 10kg bags per week with a mare that is pretty stinky last year. I split the bags by putting a big x in them and then pour half a bucket of water into each bag and leave to do feeds, bring in horses or while they are out during the day. Then spread around when they have fluffed up.

Just remember to do this in the stable though (or the bucket method) as they often overflow!

I use a large wheelbarrow for two 15 kg bags and use the spray attachment for the hose. I also prefer to slightly spray new bags as I add them because I don't like putting them in completely dry. I just can't get it to work well that way.

we put 2x 10kg bags in a clean wheelbarrow and tip a bucket of water in and leave it overnight. But we only do this when setting up the bed, after that we just put them in dry - about a bag per week to 10 days.

How much is a tonne of wood pellets please?

Take a look at Liverpool wood pellets - various delivery sizes, premium pellets are best and if you order them for fuel (exactly the same pellets for both uses) you only pay 5% VAT I believe .....

Oh and Lilaclomax - you are absolutely right! Fluff em up in the stable - v messy otherwise! The wheelbarrow idea though is fab. I was at a yard where we share the wheelbarrows though so could really steal one for too long. Have my own now!
