Hello All :)

I just wondered if everyone could give me their opinions on the best wood pellets please? I have seen Verdo which sound good but they are quite dark. Are LWP any better and if so what's the difference between the premium and the brites? Also I found Strawsons Energy (Koolfuel) which are a good price and look pale (which just looks nicer I think).

Also how do you use them and what have you found best? Deep Litter etc?

After years of deeplittering shavings (which get dusty as they get older), I switched to wood pellets, http://www.fivestarbedding.co.uk

I deeplitter, scrape manure off the top, replenish with a new bag (cut big X in bag, fill with 3/4 bucket of water, leave for 15 mins, then rake out fluffed-up pellets which breakdown to consistency of coarse sand.

Much less wastage than shavings, don't turn dusty with old age either. Much to like about wood pellets!
 
I use straw pellets as well-from pelletbeds-don't even bother to wet down new bags once the bed is up and running, they break down easily enough on their own and twice as absorbent than wood pellets.
 
I use a company local to me. They are fencers and the wood pellets are a sideline. I pay around £240 for a tonne in bags on 10kg. Not branded obviously but great quality and really easy to muck out.
 
I've tried Corley Bio, Verdo & Woodlets so far & the worse in my opinion is Verdo. They take a long time to fluff up, they are dark in colour & I don't like them. Corley Bio are fine & my latest purchase is Woodlets. Woodlets are the cheapest I've bought & they are rally nice. They fluff up quickly & are very absorbent. Once the bed is down I slice open a bag of bedding & then hose it until the bag is full of water & then leave it. As I said Corley Bio & Woodlets fluff right up & are ready to add to the bed within 10 minutes, Verdo takes alot longer & they don't fluff up as well.

Thanks I saw the five star bedding online but when i clicked to order and said 1 pallet to see cost it said exceeds palate allowance or something? I wondered if they were still operating.

I had seen the White Horse Energy stuff that looked really good too.

Its sounding very positive for Wood Pellets so far! Will look into straw pellets too ta- whats the difference?

I hated Verdo and White horse energy. Both dark within no time and just rank
I tried 5 star which I loved and totally changed my view on wood pellets. Just taken delivery of LWP premium pellets to tide me over til the end of winter and love them- They are just as good as 5 star and ill be using them again next year.

LWP have replied to me with the following:

"Thanks for your enquiry. Yes our pellets are paler in colour than the Verdo.
There is no difference between the Premium wood pellets which come in 15kg
bags and the Balcas Brites wood pellets in 10kg bags. We bag the 15kg
premium wood pellets ourselves and the 10kg balcas brites come pre-bagged to
us. Hope this helps, if you have any further questions do not hesitate to
contact us.

Volcano Wood fuels are the new name for LWP so the same company- its quite cheap until you select the correct 20% VAT then it goes up a fair bit :(

Still a good price though!
 
Interesting, thanks! Others don't seem to change the VAT for bedding/fuel. I wouldn't mind trying them in the wood burner, actually. Once we've burnt all the panelling (cheap rubbish, don't worry!) we'll need something else.

Same here. Find the Woodlets so much better, easier and softer than LWP who I have used for the last 4 years. I won't be changing again, really like them. I ordered one day and they were here the next too.
 
Have used several different types of pellets and always come back to LWP for absorbancy and all round quality. might be tempted by woodlets next time though if they really are that good.
 
Re burning them.
I make poobricks from manure. They burn well and are odourless when dry.

This year I'm going to experiment making bricks from used wood pellet/manure mix too..
 
That's really interesting.
I've always used LWF but this time I used white horse energy (they have a variety of different types - can't remember which ones I bought) as they worked out cheaper. I have never had such a white bed - not dark at all.
 
I have my livery yard on wood pellets and believe me Ive tried them all!! I started on 5 star bedding which I loved but unfortunately the owner died and they havent traded since. LWP were ok but you needed a lot of them. Verdo were the worst, they didnt break down quickly and are very dark. The best by far are 'Platinum Plus Pellets' available from White House Energy, they come in 20kg bags which are perfect. The pellets are smaller so break down quickly and are very light and bright. My beds have never been as bright, dry and fluffy. Love them would highly recommend. I tried them as I saw a review pretty much saying what I just have. Next day free delivery too - perfect.....
 
I also use LWPs and think good value for money. Once the bed is established I don't wet any new pellets added to the existing bed. I just scrape top off and add half a bag spread over a reasonable area and then cover. I find this freshens the bed up and as long as I keep the bed fairly deep, it's still comfortable for the horse to lie on. i've got the bed on a rubber floor and find it very easy to muck out.

I've been a staunch supporter of Corley for many years, they're great. But I've recently been buying Snowflake cat litter and find that it's a lot better! The bags are slightly smaller than 10kg and I don't wet them so they don't look like they go very far. But two bags are lasting well over 10 days before more needs to go in.
 
The difference in pricing on pellets comes down to whether you are purchasing the bedding product or the burning product. The equine bedding is subject to 20% VAT whereas the Fuel/Burning pellets are only subject to 5% VAT, i some somewhere recently that someone had contacted a company selling pellets for both bedding & burning and confirmed there was no difference in how the product was produced just the VAT charge against them.

I have used White Horse pellets previously and loved them, only stopped using them when i moved my mare to grass livery. I'm now moving back to DIY stable/grazing and will be going back to using wood pellets again.
