I was told by Mole Valley a couple of months ago that Woodpecker shavings aren't produced anymore, and Mole Valley have been struggling to get small-flake shavings of any brand since early autumn. I bought some small-flake bales from an independent shop in January but haven't needed to buy any more since then.

it was mole I rang this morning to order 50. I had no idea there was a problem and was told they didn't have any, didn't have any on order either. Another mole sold their last 2 this morning, had none delivered today when expected.
When I ask why I was told that it was due to woodburners. The manufacturers of shavings had realised their product commanded a higher price when made into logs.

Another told me there were less shavings as the wood was being sold as firewood and a third told me Ukraine.

Anyone know if any of those are correct or what the reason is for the shortage.

Britestar, why is bedding in short supply, obviously things like eqinola are if people cannot get shavings but why can't they get shavings? It hasn't been in the past has it?
Do you anticipate the situation improving?

Still waiting for delivery to the building supplier who stock Stable Choice by Metsawood. They are manufactured in Scotland but for some reason they're still not in stock despite me being told mid Jan.

I've found comparable quality shavings but not volume or price comparable shavings.

A lot of wood products came in from Russia (and other eastern European countries), so obviously that has stopped.
Not such a big issues over the summer, but now at the end of winter it's made a big impact. Other suppliers are trying to plug the gap, and changed merchandise to make more money.
Also heard there was a fire at bedmax, although think they are back up and running.

I switched from wood pellets to straw pellets last autumn when the prices started massively increasing. I know alot of places now just don't try and stock wood pellets as they are too hard to get hold of, and too expensive.

From where I'm sitting, shavings are made 300 yards away in one direction, and wood pellets 5 miles away in the opposite direction. There's no shortage of either, but the pellet price has gone through the roof so I no longer buy them (the price has actually just come down a bit because everyone is looking for an alternative) and the quality of the shavings has dropped, and they are definitely not squishing as much in the bales as they use to.

I've gone over to flax bedding, works out much cheaper, much easier to muck out, less wasteful, and I can get a pallet of it delivered whenever I want.

The bigger yard I work on is having a lot of trouble getting shavings. They can get chopped straw but no one much likes it and they seem to get very dirty on it. They are currently having to have bit of a mixture of whatever shavings she can source.

I like Woodpecker shavings but can't buy them any more. I had heard that shavings are in demand for biomass boilers but whether that's true or not I couldn't say.
I don't like any of the other brands of shavings that I can buy, so I'm certainly not paying £12+ per bale for something I don't rate. Once my supply of shavings is used up I'm changing to straw pellets & will see if those suit us.

can't change for us, only small flakes work on our system. One supplier has some small flake coming in today at 11.99 each.

We are allowed no more than 3.
One of our problems is we have a monopoly of Mole valley in our area. Mole ordering and stock control at our local branch has been useless for many years.

When I got my last pallet my delivery man said he won’t be getting anymore and is retiring because all the shavings came from Russia and with the war it is going to be much much harder to source shavings.

Everywhere is having issues and the prices have gone through the roof.

I’m considering cardboard but I can’t find anyone who delivers to NI. We are always behind the times so no one experiments with alternative options.

Pray tell where? My wood pellets which are a must are now £10 a bag. I go through 4 a week 😳

I’d be happy to trial wood pellets and the chopped straw even though the straw was historically rubbish for my wet horse. But if it’s just as banks/topper it might be ok.

Wood pellets are used on biomass boilers and a huge proportion came from East Europe. Lucky for us we have always used straw as we are in an area of arable farmers. I only have one top competition horse, that has had colic surgery in the past, on shavings - why would you spend £12 + per bale for the horse to p...& s... on?

I'm sure I saw on FB that someone on the east coast is doing cardboard bedding - egg boxes I think.

Found it! Bangor, she's called Clare, email is contact@behindthestabledoor.co.uk

I looked at cardboard bedding but it's as dear as shavings once the delivery costs are added on. I'd have to buy & store a whole pallet-load too as there isn't anywhere round here who stocks it.

Paddy I hear you re. Mole. They got a new buyer a few years ago and I am convinced it's someone who's never been on the business end of any of the stock!

Arley Moss seem to have shavings in stock at the minute, several different ones, but unless you are local to them a whole pallet would be easiest to order and cheapest when you add on the delivery charge. I have used them and good service, and they can deliver all over the country by using Pallet Line haulage company.

The small flake shavings I bought last year at £9 a bale are now £14.95 a bale o_O My favourite ones I had before that came from Sweden apparently and the place can't get hold of them anymore. Who knows what I'm going to do because £15 a bale is not sustainable!!!!

I have just started using nedz bedz as the price of wood pellets had rocketed. I find them much better than wood pellets so even with a price drop in pellets I shall continue with nedz.

Tell me about it. I would give anything to go and sort out Mole's stock control problems. They drive me mad beyond belief.
So many issues. I wanted Dengie grass pellets. Didn't have them for weeks and weeks. Why? Dengie apparently didn't have the right plastic bags. Rang Dengie. We can supply the pellets, no problem. Rang one of the director's of Mole (she was very good) and they were there 2 days later.
Just so many problems with them and such a lack of interest.

Not sure where in Devon you are but these have shavings in stock

thanks. Sadly we are a lot further south so Barnstaple not really viable.

just looked up Arley Moss and they seem to have many different makes at reasonable prices. They are in Cheshire. I got a delivery charge Cheshire to Devon for a pallet of 48 which was £100.

That might work well for some who want to club together for a load.

I’m having the same issues with grass pellets. Made worse by the fact their stock system often says they have them when actually they don’t.
I gave up and bought some Emerald Green pellets mail order instead.
