wood shavings

does anyone, or would anyone consider buying wood shavings, from a wood yard that havent been dust extracted. unlike the nice ones that come bailed.

just makes you think when you can buy a big bag for a £1 or a bale round about a £5

A riding school I know does this and TBH the beds are awful and all the ponies coughing!

We don't but have a friend who uses them and has no problem. Mind you she has old fashioned high ceilinged stone stables and I think that has something to do with it.

We use them from a timber yard (both sawdust and shavings, mixed with "real shavings" - about half and half). We deep litter so the beds settle well and we've had much fewer problems with coughing (ie none) than when we used straw.

The riding school where my horse WAS in livery used this as it was free if they collected it. But when the sawdust was put in stables, a thick layer of JUST DUST used to cover everything. Imagine that going into your horse's lungs all the time. My horse is now in a different yard. QED.

I was getting mine from the timber factory for years, sadly it shut down and it was too far to go to the next one, but I had no problems with the shavings and much more economical!

I dont like it. If you notice the dust cloud when you are putting down bed - the horse is going to be left in with this. I suppose not quite the same as the spores found in straw - but still seems bad idea.

I used to a few years back.... The ones I got some were redish in colour and some white.... I found the red were really dusty but didn't have too many problems with the white ones!

I do and they are great
