Wood/straw pellets without mats?

Does anyone use pellets of any kind without mats? I;d like to change over to pellets but shelling out for the pellets and a full set of mats for 2 stables rather over stretches the budget - are they ok to use without??

I did this in an extra stable. Put quite a thick bed of pelletts (fluffed up) down and remove the wet once a week. Makes a good deep firm bed

My friend used wood pellets without mats last year, you have to use alot to bed down initially but you get a lovely thick bed, I was so impressed I am going to do the same this year!!!

Yes, I do. As long as the bed is deep enough and keep the base firm it'll be fine.

Try bunting down a couple of bales of shavings first, makes a lovely base to hold the pellets together, and then the pellets make it super absorbant!
