Haven't put up any stables yet but I do worry about wooden stables as they can get unbearably hot for horses. Any ideas for cooling them down in this weather?

Put them up under or close to trees :)
Makes a right nuisance for gutter clearing in late autumn, and also the worry about stray branches, but for shade & shelter its the most sensible for them.
Stake out your proposed area & see where the sun travels during the day.

I have on very rare occasions had a hosepipe running over the roof of my long block which are brilliant boxes all year round, except in high temps in mid summer. I also use door chains so bottom doors can be opened & air circulates better
These days I use the other side of the yard, under the trees, so while the boxes get the early morning sun & up to about 10am, they then cool quite quickly. Ideal for popping the Fuzzies in from lunchtime :)

No problems, don’t have light panels put on the roof, and have windows that slide open put in all the sides and back also have chat grills put in between the stables and don’t bother having top doors or if you do take them off. You will never shut them and they only get in the way. This will allow a good flow of air, good luck.

Clear panels in the roof are fine, as long as they are NOT in direct sun.
eg: they are put on the side away from the rising sun, or on the shady side if you are able to :)

I have them in 5 stables & have not had an issue from cooking through them in over 30+ years. They are a real benefit for light :)

I have wooden stables and they are not too hot. It's certainly cooler inside them than outside and horses are spending all day in them just now by choice. They have some plastic sheeting in the roof for light. They have good vents so that may be helping.

There was a post about this quite recently and someone had a good idea about soaking large blankets and hanging them against the walls.
Thought it was a top tip !

Great replies guys - thank you. I must admit two houses back we had wooden stables and when they got unbearably hot I used to hose all the walls down inside - but then we did have our own water supply.

My horse has access to his wooden stable from his paddock at the moment. Under the eaves at the front was lovely and cool all day. When building them if you could have a concrete area to the front which you can temporarily section off if required so he can stand out of the stable and under the eaves and put a haynet up for him

They wont if there is at least a half foot gap between the roof and walls with a peaked rook not a flat one. Better air circulation anywy and rain does not get in because of the roof overhang.

I have wooden stables, they are in the shade and have a clear roof panel for each stable. They aren't too hot at all; in fact when I was bringing my mare in the other day she actually chose to go into her stable rather than the little corral.

Mine are under oak trees, have a peaked roof and good insulation (double wooden walls) and they are fabulously cool despite being south facing. I don't use them in the summer but OH brought horses in around 5pm this evening as I was rushing home from work for stressage lesson at 6.30.

Despite being in full sun at that time of the evening they were lovely & cool inside.

Oh yup I forgot we have a foot mesh gap up by the roof for ventilation.... Plus the windows and the talk grill and the shaded overhang. Trouble is all the ventilation in the world isn't going to help if there is no breeze and I think they are in a bit off a sun trap- west facing and should get the prevailing coastal wind!- and that the heat then reflects up off the concrete. We did want them the other way really but planning said no
