I have previously turned out with the woof medical boot for a day or so but without a shoe on that foot. Horse now has a small wound on a hind heel. He has been in and bandaged which is working well but I was wondering about the boot over a small dressing. However he has a shoe on. Will having the shoe on just wear through the boot and wreck it?

I went and looked at their site and it says it is safe for turnout and stables. And also for shoes or no shoes.

Woof medical boots - great concept but the reality is they barely stand up to a sparrows fart, let alone a shod hoof. Save your pennies!

I already have one. They have worked really well before but that was without a shoe. Once from a nail in his hood and subsequent poultice. The other time when he has lost a shoe to stop loosing more hoof waiting for the fattier to come.

The wound is right on his heel. It was hurting him. The normal cleaning and cream wasn’t enough. So he bad 2 nights in and bandaged which really helped. My decision for tonight was another night in, out with cream or a smaller bandage with the woof boot over the top.

You can certainly try it - but I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t survive it.

Mine had the toe walked through pretty quickly and that was without a shoe on. And the sole came away shortly after.

In your position I’d opt to pop a nappy on the foot, some old plastic feedsack and got town with duct tape instead. Much cheaper and probably more water tight.
