I took Canto out for a proper hack on his own last night! I've had him for about 18 months and when I first got him I couldn't even go out in company - he was dangerous

I've managed to get him hacking out in company, and at the beginning of the summer I set a goal to be hacking out on our own, but had given up on that idea a month or so ago.

Anyway, Canto has been at the yard I work on at weekends and I've been having lessons and working on his napping. He's improved so much and last night I was feeling brave so thought I'd have a go...

We got down the drive, turned up the road and got a few feet along when he tried to spin - I put into practise what I've been taught and got him going again - we carried on and he was good as gold

A bit hesitant sometimes, but didn't do anything else naughty

We went round a busy village and came back, a tractor and trailer passed us and he was fine

I'm Soooooo pleased with myself, and with him

You know those times when you really love your horse and really enjoy them? I'm so happy with him at the moment

Sorry - a bit self indulgent but it's taken us so long to get here it feels like a huge achievement. I had almost resigned myself to the fact that we wouldn't be able to hack on our own

I was so chuffed when I got back I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for ages

I just need to keep it up now, so he gets used to going out on his own...

I can't quite believe we did it! I thought he was going to be even naughtier on his own but in fact it didn't really make much difference - just that he had to take instruction from me rather than the horse in front lol! Good job that's what we've been working on

Hi! Lovely to hear that the gorgeous Mr Canto is progressing - hacked Jin out by myself a couple of times now - I know how you feel, great isn't it! Hope you're well xx
