Woohoo Patey has arrived - and a Q for hunting folk...

[ QUOTE ]
ribbons down when you're hunting, up the rest of the time, i was always told.

[/ QUOTE ]

Deffo up for hunting unless you are staff - it is to do with the fact that hunt staff are not permitted to put their collars up if it is raining, so the ribbon takes the rain over their collars and down their backs (in theory) - as followers we may put our collars up, so no need for dangling ribbons

Also there is no way one of these will come off without a strap. Is hard enough trying to pull one off with your hands!

[/ QUOTE ]

I will be honest, it is 100% more secure than my GPA

GPA's inevitably roll around on people's heads (at least half of GPA wearers seem to constantly be peering out from under the peak where it has fallen down)

ahhh it all makes sense now I was bidding on a patey last week and it had the ribbons cut off. I did wonder why someone had cut them off a lovely hat now I know

Didn't buy it either I thought a 2nd hand hat was not the best investment

Oh yes, would love to see a picture too! At one of the horse trials I was helping at the quad bike rider was wearing her Patey! Green sounds lovely Weezy.

PMSL! They almost make a sucking noise when you try to get them off!

Hope you have lots of happy days in it; second the pic needed!

Sorry this is the best I can look when having suffered from a week long migrane and I am way too lazy to go find make up LOL

[/ QUOTE ]

Wasn't too bad a report, thanks. Pity he didn't check some spellings of names though and he also missed out the best professional huntsman we've had (Charlie Wilkin) before they went onto amateurs!
Sorry W, am going now, not hi-jacking any longer!

[ QUOTE ]
Ok - I am now going to prove my utter ignorance but I have to ask. What the heck is a Patey?

[/ QUOTE ]

Patey is the bespoke maker of a traditional, vvv exp, hunting hat similar to a "beagler" hat - far smaller & compact than normal helmet, which only relies on a tight fit to stay on your head.

It looks fab but is not nearly as safe as helmet type as it doesnt include chinstrap, doesnt have 1" safety inner foam lining all round, nor extends/drops down to protect back of head/neck/temple as all EEC approved riding hats have to.

Am v envious of the look, but wouldnt wear one myself as have seen so many good riders on safe horses have bad falls in our hunt - horses slipping whilst cantering through brick-strewn gateways, riders & horses being knocked over etc whilst jumping hedges by loose kids/ponies.

The hats are often knocked off or forward on impact with ground, causing broken nose, concussion etc. & leave you no protection when 4 hooves then flail around your head whilst supernag tries to get up whilst you're on the deck.

But Weezy, saw your pic - you & hat both stunning
