Looking to buy an "old-fashioned" wool rug with leather buckle and proper binding. Can anyone recommend any manufacturers? Thanks!

Shires Newmarket Wool rug are very good quality, but obviously quite expensive. They are thick, heavy rugs and tbh mine has only been used in the very bad winter of 2010 when it was -15 at night on my clipped mare.

Equiport are lovely but also the Friday fox website for the Classic Whitney day rug and of course Hermes but you might have to sell the house .

these are beautiful and well made ... i'm buying one next year for a show rug

Spray on scotchguard is your friend!
I have no idea how but one of my boys managed to smear poo on the flank of his in the lorry, thankfully not in the braiding. He must have a directional sphincter.

Thanks-I do see it as an investment so don't mind up to £250/300 but would rather not have to remortgage!!! Did look at the equiport ones but wondered whether they have a tradestand or shop where I might be able to see them? Looked high and low for the shires ones but can't see them for sale anymore :( also found south east horse rugs online?

Check they are 100% wool. I remember when the majority of stabled horses had a wool rug for daytime, we referred to them as 'Day rugs', I remember buying mine from 'Swayne, Aidney & Brigg' on Piccadily Road. It was Navy with red trim, my pride and joy. I also remember the ungrateful witch that managed to turn it into handkerchief sized pieces overnight.

They can be gently hand washed, in cool water and are most likely made from pre shrunk wool these days.
