Wooley is lame. Opinions please

Wooley is lame today on a back leg. Has been seen galloping about the muddy field. He has been in a wee area up till now, 23 years old. Not called vet yet as I think it could be a sprain. I will keep him in. Of course it it worsens I will call the vet.
Ideas?

Is there any heat of swelling? Does it look like he is foot sore or is it higher up. He is also older, maybe some chilly weather is causing arthritis to ackt up?

If no swelling/heat anywhere it's quite possible (especially at this time of year) that he's got a foot infection
