Woooo scary hack today-horse stung by wasp

Took two of our horses out today for a hack.

I got on the mare and rode round the school for a bit (she had kissing spines so we're always careful) whilst my boyfriend got on his horse. He'd been so worried about me he forgot to put his hat on!! So had to get off and start all over again. Should have seen the signs...!

Walked up the lane, crossed the main road and walked into the lane on the other side when suddenly our gelding went totally mad-rearing, spinning, trying to bolt back towards the main road, spinning and slipping on the wet roads, backing up in to the stone wall etc. Thought they were going to get hit by a car and die, was honestly so scary. Finally got him to stand still long enough for mike to leap off and we walked up the lane a bit more. Thought something was in his ear so checked but nothing, but he was really distressed and very panicky so we walked home.

As we walked past the spot he went nuts we spotted a huge wasps nest, so that must have been why, he must have been stung in the ear.

Scary stuff!! Thought they were going on to the main road or going to fall over.

Huge kudos to the mare though-she stood totally still whilst he was panicking, lead the way when we walked home, and then I rode her in the school and she was lush! Her owner has been working really hard with her to overcome her habit of rearing/fly bucking and it was so nice to ride today feeling like she was enjoying her work, not in pain and having fun. Was lovely-as were the extended canters down the long side, shes an ex team chaser so she can seriously fly!

I did nearly pap myself to be honest!! It was so scary because he just completely freaked out, he's normally a real gentleman but my oh couldn't get a hold of him at all :( poor pony.

But hey, people pay a fortune at fairgrounds for the ride my OH had!!
 
Sounds like an exciting hack!

I got stung yesterday - got on horse without realising there was a wasp sunbathing on my saddle :eek: :eek: Problem is it is still really swollen and sore and I have an 8 hour ride on Sunday :eek: :eek: Do you think a seatsaver would help :p
 
Was there any marks from the stings?
I think the same thing happened to me, horse started trying to itch her front foot - looked nothing there, went onwards and she started turning round nudging at my feet basically saying get off me! - I ignored her though and made her trot on which turned into a canter w/ her bucking like crazy so hopped off and realized that we went over a wasp nest in the ground a few yards back.
Wasn't any lumps though, weird.

Can't imagine it happened on a road - so scary - when it happened w/ me I was in a field luckily- but ugh shouldn't they be dying off already ?! :(
 
I *think* it stung him in his ear - he was shaking his head like mad and wouldnt let us near his right ear at all so I can't see for definite but I'm pretty certain. He's a really honest horse, unbelievably safe, so it must have REALLY hurt!!

Ouuucccchhhhhh, being stung on the bum! Ouch ouch ouch - get some of that cream that takes the pain out!! And a big padded seat saver!!!!

Ouch is about right! Had 3 to ride today and had to stay out the saddle for the whole time, so now my thighs are complaining too!
 
The first hack I went on Picasso we went straight into a swarm of bees!He was very good,just put his ears down,picked up speed and ploughed through
 
Very scary and the wasps are terrible atm.

We hit a wasps nest out on hound excercise a few weeks ago, cue 3 horses going mental with one lady being thrown off onto the road. Although landing on her head, she got checked out at hospital and was fortunately ok.

My horse had 12 stings and spent the next few days rubbbing himself raw poor lad - I was also stung on my back and bum, but didn't notice with all the chaos at the time!! It was extremely scary as no-one knew what to do, other than try and stay on.

I researched on the internet on what to do in this circumstance, and apparently the best course of action is to get away from the nest as quickly as possible, as the wasps will only travel a short distance even in attack mode.
 
Same exact thing happen to my boy, we were out on a hack, I stopped to adjust tack felt him jump rather and heard a buzzing.. looked down and we had actually stood straight on a wasp nest.

So we galloped off before we really made them cross and got even more stung. We cantered up the meadow and along the grass track, took my guy to trot then walk.. after a few minutes of walk he had sweated up into a white froth (nothing to do with the cantering he's a fit TB) I jumped off realising he must have been stung, and phoned the vet as he was breathing faster than he should have.. which would show a reaction to the stings. They advised to walk home and see how it went, I kinda knew it wasnt going to be that simple.. He started off by getting hives on his face and once untacked all over his body (it seemed to accelerate the reaction when I took his boots off, I guess it allowed the poison to get round his body better when I had removed his boots) Anyway he ended up total swollen around his eyes and muzzle, another phone call to the vets to see if they would come out asap as I was a little worried as if he swelled even more he'd end up not being able to breath properly.. Anyway vet arrived and gave him some steroids and pain killing injections, by the end of the day he was pretty much back to his normal Rhubarby self!!

I give him total credit though he hardly reacted whilst being stung and took the bullet for me cos I didnt get stung at all!

He is an amazing TB, Im very lucky to have such a wonderful guy :)
