Was just reading another post by China (I think) regarding thoughts on having a shetland as a companion, my first thought was

'Oh gawd! Have some a shettie with your laminitis!'

My second thought was:

I remember the 3 little critters at my old riding school, all narky, all stubborn and one that made an art form out of relieving anyone standing near it of huge chunks of flesh!

What are the first thoughts that spring to your mind when hearing the 'S' word or are there any other types of horse that you immediately have strong thoughts about (good or bad!)

We have friends in France who run a riding school and when they first came over to visit and told us they had about 40 shetlands, we fell about laughing and they couldn't understand why!

The thought of having to deal with shedloads of little 'shets' was too much for us, but they use them regularly in the riding school where they are very popular and they wanted to find more. I did have visions of cheval burgers, but when we visited they did indeed have 40!

Apparently the French buy most of them from Holland where they are hugely popular, and so I wondered whether the ones we get here are more grumpy because they get outgrown and sold on from home to home, often under-exercised and overweight and permanently on lami watch. These were slim, fit, and much loved.

But yes, my reaction was the same as yours and I am sure the same word sprang to mind :)

shetland the place .. cold and wet most of the time. shetland the pony too hot most of th time, but very good fun if well mannered. need for exceptional fencing!! mine makes me laugh every day and he rules the roost... boss over the big horses no messing with him!!! not an ideal companion as food intake does need to be monitored/restricted!

Lol lol lol!!!

Our shetland is a little escapist houdini turd at times....but other than that he is slim, cheery and very loved....even though he gets totally bullied by Star...

One word, *****lands!

ETA: Ahh boo you can't read what I wrote! Basically replace the 'e' with an 'i' :)

Usually I would totally agree with this comment but having taken on a mini Shetland for my Grandson I now have to disagree as I love him!!!

He has become the favourite on the yard, all the other owners (and horses) are besotted with him and he is just fun!

But he doesn't bite, barge, demand titbits or kick and we all joke that he is really a shrunk 15hh cob!

Same as Koko! I used to like them until one at my old yard kicked me and then she tried to again on a separate occasion then on that same day she reared up about 6 times and kept trying to bite me all because she didnt want to go in her stable! She used to be quite nice, but is developing (she's only 3) into a bit of a little monster!
I have known a few others who have been good at times but little monkeys other times :P

Bertie bas***d (basett) taught my daughter to ride and if not, certainly how to stay on, and has taught many children since, he dosn't get sold but just passed on, and has been in the same town for 17yrs, he is a standard. My daugthers first pony was a miniture, and I had a miniture as a child who was broken to harness, with a small sulky, with red gloss harness with tiny bells on it, the amount of times he took off across the field and under the fence, my dad nicked the wheels off my bike to replace the ones the *****land ripped off the sulky. you got to love them lol.

I can only base my opinions on my own shetland who I have owned since she was a 3yo (she's now 20!). She's a funny creature, definately has "small horse" syndrome. She spends her days being very possesive over 'her stable', if I take a horse in it to groom (I leave the door open permanently so my horses can go in and out as they please) - she will tank over from wherever she is to stand in HER stable with her ears pinned back. God forbid if you ask her politely to move out of the way (she likes to park herself IN the doorway). She likes to think she's top boss even though the other two are 13.2hh and 16hh. She tries to bite them and kick, they just blatantly ignore her which drives her even more mad!

Its definately a "small" issue with them. As soon as I sit down on the floor to be on her level, her ears go forward and she's the sweetest little thing!
