Word of warning re:hay nets in stables

As regarding having a sore head and using a headcollar, could you use a collar round her neck until she is no longer sore and therefore not making an issue of putting the headcollar on.

I hope your mare is feeling better soon, and gets over this stress.

I just won't use haynets - there are just far too many ways for horses to injure themselves. Those who feed from the floor from a hay net - are you actually mad?!! Dangerous just isn't even the word, especially for a shod horse, it would be so easy for the net to get caught between the hoof and shoe. I dread to think what would result.
Ours are fed on the floor. They are v good doers so instead of feeding from a net we do a normal evening stables with their tea and a couple of handfuls of hay, then a late check with the rest of their (weighed and soaked!) hay. They travel with nothing unless it is a long journey when they get a hay bag tied up with thinned bailer twine.

i agree but they are useful for carrying hay around in though

I hate haynets - hate filling them, tieing them, carrying them wet, untieing them - after 30 years of keeping horses I have finally given up and now feed from the floor.

Bliss ....................

Wont use hay nets. My friend lost a goat that got itself stuck in a hay net and strangled it. Her husband found it the next morning, not nice. I know horses are a bit bigger and less inclined to get their necks in a hay net but this story goes to show they can be dangerous. i put my hay in piles on the floor. Might waste some but it's better than an injured horse.

Hope your mare is ok.

mmmm feed and hay always fed on floor - for one a task less for me but more important its more natural and backed up by my back lady who asked if fed in nets or floor - when said floor she smiled as nets cause neck and back probs so hey ho im doing something right lol she also said and ive seen this - they pace themselves with hay - eat some sleep eat bit more sleep and they do :) dont own net and never will :)
