Now i realise this has probably never ever happened to any other horse on the planet,my boy is special
grin.gif
and i could wrap him in bubblewrap in a padded space that he couldnt move in and he would still get into trouble

How many of you leave the horselyx tubs in the stable on the floor for your horses?I did...went down yesterday and my boy..dont ask how,i havnt a bloody clue, had his back hoof wedged in the lick tub....not just the the plastic tub,but the whole lick moulded rock solid around his hoof
frown.gif
fortunately he isnt a panicky horse and i had to hammer and chisel it off in the morning, had he panicked the angle his foot was at he could quite easily have fractured something in the lowest part of his leg

He is absolutely fine Thank god,but i will NEVER have another lick unless i have the holder! Please guys dont leave your horse unattended with these things

Yes, I know of someone who had that happened to their horse too! I always thought it was solid(ish) so but yep it happened.x

Trust me they are solid

,it took me a while to get it off,he went in toe 1st and that is how it set?All i can think is he had his hoof rested on the top of it and hoof heat melted it?

I haven't used one since B managed to weld her ear closed with one - have you ever tried soaking an ear in warm soapy water?

Glad your boy is ok tho

I think you can get mangers for them so they can be attached to the wall which should prevent it from happening (unless Im thinking of another lick which is probable)

...sounds like they have caused a few problems, would love to know how she stuck her ear together though??lol!Bloody horses!Yes they do sell a mount for them, and yes i should have bought one but never expected what i saw the other day
crazy.gif
,if i hadnt have seen it i would never have believed it...normally after 4 days he manages to shite in them?not stand in them
smile.gif

I think she face planted in it - I arrived the following morning to find it all over her face, her left ear welded shut and bits in her right ear too. It was even in her forelock!! I counted my blessings that she isn't a grey and didn't get her one again - stick to Rockies salt licks now
grin.gif

I too have had a dangerous issue with those damn licks....baby horse picked his up to my chest height and dropped it on my toe (twice)

That sounds a really nasty thing to happen in all seriousness...I will get a wall hangy thing (whoever said that is right I'm sure I've seen them, like a square bracket the lick drops into) when using them in future, thanks for the warning.

iv got the holders & they are great, well worth the investment. Saves from the delights of cleaning poo out of them (altho 1 of them did stil manage this somehow!) & you can put bars over them to restrict their intake. i spent ages putting off buying them but after reading this post im glad i have them now as my mare would have freaked if this had happened to her.

That also happened to a horse at my hard, it was extremely difficult to get off as the foot had gone in at an angle. I think in the end, they ended up chiselling it off like you did.

You can buy holders to put on the stable wall, this is now the only way I will feed one, as you said it could've caused a serious accident

Thanks for the warning - to be honest it would never have occoured to me that could happen!

I dont leave mine in the stable but only because one of mine likes to strike the container until it shatters (leaves some very sharp, hard bits of plastic..*shudders* ) I was more worried about these than the actual lick!!

*wanders off to buy lick holders online.....sigh more money*

Sorry, but who'd be stupid enough to leave one in over night!

Carrie used to mutilate hers, I've never seen a horse "rip" something to shreds with it's five remaining teeth before... Much more than five minutes every other day and it would have gone!

Only time she was ever allowed it was tied in the yard whilst being groomed or mucked out. And even that was a danger to anyone standing close to her!

Dor has a agricultural lick that I found thats suitable for horses. She's had it a month already and it's proving much more value for money than ANY specific horse licks!

they are good for helping ensure pasture kept horse's are getting all their vits/mins if they dont get any hard feed.

i now have a big cowlick that is mounted onto a post in the feild, works well & is lasting (think that has more to do with the fact it startd life about a foot wide

)

we had a horse at the yard who got his foot stuck too.

my horse has one left with him 24/7 (he lives out) and he has managed not to attach it to himself yet!
