Words Fail Me!

Also all this about 'weight carriers', is that actually true? Because some of the vanner types you see, they were built for pulling rather than ridden work, and have horrendously weak backs.

There are horses built to carry weight, but nothing with a weak back will - thats why I hate hearing of people buying a Clydesdale to carry a heavy rider.

Usually it is the heavier pony types that best carry weight. Highland ponies for example were bred to carry deer across the hills for hours - Haflingers to do the same job. Icelandics, despite their size, carry full grown men with ease.

I'm no expert on cobs, but I'd imagine a quality HW would carry weight, however like a horse to do any other high impact job you would have to select for conformation.

ETA, however there aren't many out there that would carry in excess of 16 st regularly, particularly doing hard work/jumping/beginners who can't carry themselves. So weight carrying I guess is relative...

Well she wants to lose weight, which is great, but the people who are suggesting to her that 13-14 stone is ok on a 13.1 youngster, cob or not, are not helping! At 12 stone I worry about backing my own youngster. He'll be almost 17hh, and has the bones of an elephant... but youngsters should not be carrying more than the bare minimum and 13 stone on that little pony is just wrong imo.

I think we should have some sort of 'virtual secret handshake' so we can identify each other on these threads - as we can't see the bruising that we must all surely have from the head/desk banging!

I saw and commented, and didn't think that anyone had directed personal insults at any one individual ........... the one constant running through the thread was 'ride something appropriate to your size and weight'.

I do get beyond frustrated with the continual advertisements for 'beautiful colt foals' - they are NOT beautiful, they are c**p, and even if they had the potential to be beautiful, IMO they would only be beautiful once they had their 'nads off. Oh, and, 'my ponys bin s**ting water for two weeks, what shall I do' ........... 'feed it natral yogut and pommygranit juice' .............Aaargh!

i have a pony of a similar size and build. I weigh about 12 st. I would not dream of riding him. we are doing lots of in hand walks till I am much lighter, my vet reckons he could easily take 10 1/2 - 11 st but I would rather be less before trying.

It seems the thread was deleted. At one point somebody called somebody else "rasist" (their spelling not mine) for commenting on her weight. I'm not sure what is scarier to be honest!

Chuckle!

I am 10.5st and used to ride a 13.1 Fell, and he didn't know I was there. I reckon he could easily take 13.5 stone without batting an eye. However, he was a mature chap bred for carrying weight, and was almost as broad as he was tall. I didn't even look big on him and I'm 5'4".
