I'm supposed to be at work in 45 mins but the farrier is due today and hasn't yet arrived - he's running late and will be here sometime this afternoon

So, on the basis that I don't have a particularly understanding boss

what would be the best thing to do:

1. Phone in sick
2. Tell him small child has been sent home from school sick
3. Come up with another tenuous excuse
4. Go to work and then leg it back when farrier tells me he's on his way?

Quick answers please - I need to leave at 12.15 latest

Well, I would leave the horses in the stables and leave the farrier to sort them out without me!

I would, but it's a new farrier and he's not done them before. They also live on a farm near my house so there's no one else to hold them for me.

Tell the farrier that you have to be at work this pm and re-arrange him. If its a new farrier and he is late and is not prepared to meet you half way with a mutually conveinent time, I would be looking for another farrier.

I'd cancel farrier and ask him to fit you in another day, maybe saturday morning. As he was late in the first place, he shouldn't complain too much (she says...knowing full well that farriers always think it's fine for them to be 7 hours late but if you are 2 mins late getting there, they blow a gasket!

I'd probably go for Option 2 - but I can understand about the "tempting fate" bit however.

Option 1 - is too obvious, especially if work know you had a farrier appointment this morning.

Option 4 - possibly, but is there any guarantee you'd be able to get away again?

Option 3 - Depends. Perhaps a fence could have fallen down meaning that the horses would stray onto a road if you didn't fix it straight away?

As it s a new farrier I would agree with the other poster that has said to try and re- arrange at your convenience. I'm afraid that is why I parted compoany with 3 previous farriers before finding my current one. I re arrange my job to be there for them and expcet them to keep their appointments - you are after all the customer - a concept that some farriers struggle with I realise! If he can let you down on his first visit it maybe setting a pattern for the future!

I probably sound like a right stroppy cow but it does annoy me that some farriers seem to think you have nothing better to do sit around waiting for them!

I agree it's not ideal - but he's a remedial farrier and I need him to see to my welshies feet which is why I changed to him.

he's also based 100 miles away from me and is only in this area every few weeks

Sometimes you just can't win!!

I'm going to go to work and pray that I can get away again
