A friend of mine is taking a gap year before uni and is wanting to get 1/2/3 weeks work experience on a top eventing yard (WFP, Oli T etc...) living in before the new year. I think she is then wanting to be a working pupil for the remaining school year till she starts uni, live in post again and i think shes wanting to take her horse with her too, (also to a top eventing yard) but she doesnt know who to ask or who does work experience or working pupils.

As she is not aquianted with the wonderful world of Horse and Hound forums i thought id make a thread and get peoples experience/ideas as to who she can contact...thank you!

I found my position by looking through the trainer details at the back of the BE rule book. Found the ones nearest me and dropped them an email or phone call :)

While putting a "name" on your friend's CV will look good, if she actually wants to learn something and get time to spend on her own horse, then she'd be better off going to someone slightly less famous, who would have more time to spend with her.

I have a friend who went as a WP to someone famous - he was hardly ever at the yard as he was away competing abroad a lot or doing lecture demos or teaching paying clients. She spent a lot of time poo picking, cleaning tack, washing off horses - she only got to ride her own horse in her spare time.

I have another friend who events and takes one WP a year - they get to ride/compete their own horses and some of hers, they get lunge lessons, stable mnagement training, exams (if they want) etc etc - they live in, and get livery and a wage. The only drawback is she's not a household name.

I appreciate not every situation is the same - it depends what your friend wants out of her time :)

Yard and Groom is a good website to look on. A lot of top riders can advertise on there and you can set up your own C.V page. I know he isn't an eventer but William Funnell was advertising for a groom on there not long ago, so its just an example of the types of riders that use it :) good luck!
