in 2016 I have a weeks work expierience. When I'm older I would like to be based around vets and was wondering if anyone knew any yards that offered it or vets? (I'm around Oxfordshire/Oxford area) thanks.
I advise not to do work experience on a horse yard. You would most likely not do anything except muck out etc. I liveried on a yard which was a training centre. The work experience people already had horses of their own and learned nothing new.
If you want to consider Vet Sci at Uni they have very strict work experience requirements. (My daughter is Mid A levels and considering Vet Sci so we're working through it!). You must have done a minimum of 8 weeks experience - but the entry requirements are so tough more is better. You must have worked in at least 2 different practices, one large and one small; again ideally more. Large animal practices - at least around here - are reluctant to take you under 16 for insurance reasons so we did different small animal practices during the GCSE years and a week at a local petting farm for large animal handling. You must also have done at least 1 day at an abattoir or similar facility. (Our hunt has a fallen stock service so we did that.)
Vet nursing is easier to get into than vet sci - but still not easy. You'd need to speak to the College of Vet Nursing to see what their entry requirements are.
You are probably best off approaching your local small animal practices first to see who will offer work experience. Some are more open to it than others. Firefly is right that even if you can get work experience at a stables you are not hoping to learn anything more about working with horses than mucking out. (Mind you the thing you'll learn most at a vet practice is how to clean up!) But also work experience placements on yards tend to require knowledge of working with horses.
Its always worth looking for work experience which is slightly different. If the Vet route no longer appeals what about your local RDA centre? Or if you have a children's farm nearby try there? (Still mucking out - but more species!)
