I am currently working abroad with horses, but still working for my British employer if that makes sense because I'm not sure how to word it, and this morning whilst at work I broke my toe. Now I know this sounds a very pathetic injury , How ever it is quite painful and I'm finding it difficult to walk. Would you expect to come straight back to work and carry on pretty much as normal minus having to wash off horses and walk them round etc or would you expect then to have the month off as the doctor recommended ?

I've broken a toe in the past & know how painful & incapacitating it is though I still had to look after my horse as I keep her at home, I work full time & only have a 'long working hours non horsey husband' for help when necessary. However I did take a week off work & then played it by feel with a doctor appointment after the first week to see if I could manage at work (have to say I don't work with horses I am a teacher). Suggest you take a week off, rest & see how it goes.

What does your contract say about sick pay? You could probably get unpaid time off (if it's in your contract).
What has your employer said when you explained how painful it is and what the doctor said?

i broke my thumb and had it put in a cast
i took a week off work (carried on careing for my own 2)
then back to normal - working/riding - with cast on for 3 more weeks
work did pay me tho!

Shouldn't matter whether you're at home or abroad, what matters is your contract with your employer, and a basic expectation of fair and legal treatment. It's up to you (and your doc if relevant) to say whether you're fit enough to work, it's not up to your employer to say whether they think you are. You may not be entitled to paid sick leave unless it's in your contract, but may be entitled to statutory sick pay if it's not.

Otherwise it's a decision for you to make as to whether you genuinely feel well enough - and *safe* to work with the injury despite doc advising time off. But you'd need an open conversation with your employer that you're overriding medical advice and would need to agree that you don't do certain things which may not help with the healing, would hurt, or could put you, someone else or a horse in danger.
