What's the most bute that anyone here has kept a horse in work on?
I'm looking at my 16hh IDx 18 yo mare with arthritis who loves to be ridden and is pretty lame right now on one bute a day. She's been on one a day for her hocks for about 2 years but her feet have just gone since she went repeatedly nuts hacking around Xmas, which has to be a recurrence of coffin joint DJD she was diagnosed with at 5, though kept largely under control over the years, by supplements and picking the softer ground.
She's off work and bored (just got hugely excited at the thought of being spun for 30 secs on the lunge in the school, that's how bored), we've tried to mend her but Hyonate doesn't seem to work any more.
Any experiences of running oldies on bute?

btw - I absolutely understand that working her on bute covers up the damage she has and its continuation, even acceleration but this is about keeping the mare so she's able to be ridden - which she undeniably loves - for as long as we can.

Our 10 year old is on one alternate days and we expect to have to increase this over the future. The vet is happy with this. I would check with the vet but so long as you are not pushing him or competing him keeping him ridden and happy is the priority.
Have you thought of Danilon as it is less agressive on their digestive system than bute?

Thinking about putting my oldie on Danilon, just so I can hack him out (which he loves, like your girls loves being ridden) gently and keep him ticking. He gets bored and stiff without any stimulation.
