working at summer camp for rubbish pay- rights?

I'm with the Op on this one, she already has a job, she isn't a burden on society so why should she take a poorly paid job with rubbish hours just because it was offered to her, I'm self employed and have turned down customers because they want everything for nothing. i supported my OH when he walked out on a job after 2 weeks because the boss was a control freak who had cctv linked to his home so he could watch them on his days off and had them counting staples and teabags to make sure none were being taken! life is too short to run yourself into the ground for someone elses benefit/profit!
If the Op was desperate for work then it would be different, it's often easier to find another job when you're already employed, as it is i think she should enjoy the summer and relax before uni starts:)

I fully support the OP on this one :) HHO firing squad has jumped to their usual conclusions I see!

Why should someone who is experienced, qualified and in employment and contributing to society, take a low wage job with responsibility for children and minimal breaks?

If the company wants to employ someone of that experience then they should expect to pay for it. What was that saying ... pay peanuts, get monkeys?

I'm not for a minute saying that people shouldn't accept minimum wage jobs, if you are without work and need to put food on the table then you do whatever is required. But there is nothing wrong what so ever in wanting to better yourself, or saying you'd rather have a holiday than getting out of bed for a few quid you don't need.

What I am saying is that the OP had the opportunity to ask a simple question "how much does it pay"............. if they can't answer that one then she should have said, well obviously with my qualifications and my experience and the fact that this is a second job, I would not be interested in a job with """ a politically correct answer"
.....substitute[ a crapp job with min pay and no breaks].
I once went for an interview for a local job with enhanced pay, only to be told at the interview that "the advertised pay was a mistake, we pay the minimum wage"
I was not interested in the job, especially as the interviewer told me "I don't think this job is for you"
So When I got called up for the second interview, I went along, mainly out of interest, where I was told I would have to pay £100 for "training", I did not sign up to those particular T&C, but I was still put forward to the "induction", another two hours "on the job training", by that time I had had enough, and said I would like £10.00 per hour or I will report you to the Jobcentre, [not that they are interested]
I did my "invalid handling" course, but never got the certificate, weep

I'm not answering OP because my blood is beginning to boil at her attitude.

Me too.

I am sitting here with my "staff" ;) having lunch - she has a 2:1 in equine science and plenty of previous horsey experience, and works for me for a pittance (though she gets lots of tea breaks :D) and I am self employed and have been for ahem years and despite my degree, years of experience and masses of vocational qualifications I don't make much either :) But we are both enjoying what we do and would rather be working than sitting on our a*ses feeling hard done by

Have you actually read the post and thread?

The question was should she be paid for the 2 days work she had done?

There was no hint to me that she was sitting on her arse feeling hard done by.

She had asked how much she would be paid and was told they didn't know. Started a job on goodwill without a contract. Got the contract, didn't like T&C's and left. Sounds like a dodgy company to me, good riddance really.

TBH how much someone is paid and what work they are prepared to do for that pay is really up to the individual and the employer. I'm not sure why you are so affronted that the OP has deemed the job not worth her while, she is still earning a living, paxing tax and not a burden on society.

If your staff is happy to earn a pittance and have a load of tea breaks then that is also up to them and not for us to comment?

I read it that the OP had applied for the job earlier but was then asked at short notice to start then next day. At the point of starting the job she did not know the wage as the people employing her said that they didn't know.

She perhaps assumed that the wages and breaks were similar to the previous summer camp job she had done. When she found out that the pay was lower than she expected she said that she wasn't happy to work for that pay with the amount of responsibility that the job entailed.

The question she asked us was: will she get paid for the two days which she had worked?

I think yes you should get paid for those days and enjoy your lie in's!!
