Hi everyone!

Ive got a little dilemma coming up! Currently horsey is on full livery with exercise (as with work anyway i sometimes cant get to the yard). I have found out that i will be working away, possibly starting very soon :(. There is no option and for my career it has to be done.

I could just leave him on the livery as he is anyway, or drop the exercise and get a part loaner (i will not move him as will be back at wknds and the yard is fabulous). He came back into work in october after a ligament injury in his back, so i am very careful with his workload - he has been sound since and is in full work - ridden 6 days - schooled and hacked, the yard where he is did his rehab for me.

So can i really find a part loaner that is suitable - no yard duties as yard is full livery only and once i am away, riding 4 days through the week. Obviously i wouldnt want him jumped too much or too high etc, as he is a willing type and would do it.

Has anyone been in this situation and what did you do?

I would think that would be a great deal for a part loaner tbh!

I haven't been in the exact position before, I keep my horse at home, but during summer I am regularly away 3-4 nights a week, and it kills me :(

Stencilface - i am absolutely gutted, we have just really started to get on after a rocky year or so with his injury and he is such a star.

He does need a confident rider as hes a fairly forward going 16.1hh heavyweight, but it seems such a waste as he has such big paces and would do well at dressage, hunter trials & showjumping.

My home is 2.5 hrs away from where I am at vet school so I commute back and forth for the weekends (the M1 is my best friend!!!!). My father commutes for the weekend too as he works nearly 6 hrs away from home so stays away mon-fri. It is very do-able and after a while the journeys seem like nothing - 2.5hrs seems like a trip to the shops!

I think I'm in a slightly different situation - my horses are youngsters so their workload is a bit different. They get lunged by my mum / auntie 3 days a week and then ridden by a pro once a week. Then I am home on a friday so will hack and school or compete over the weekend. They seem to cope fine and I would never move them up to uni - it isnt my home and I have a lovely set up here so I agree with you about not wanting to change from a good thing!

I think that if you can find a sharer that you trust then that would be a lovely idea. As long as you come to an agreement about weekend riding; some sharers will want to ride at weekend when I'm presuming you will too. I guess you also have the benifit of being at a trusted livery yard so they could give you feedback when you arent there.

There is nothing better than driving home on a friday night knowing your horse is waiting!

Sharers who don't ride at weekends - mum found a soldier from arborfield who goes home at weekends but rides three days during the week. Or maybe a student who does the oppersite and is near the livery yard during the week and away at the weekend. It could be perfect for both of you.

where abouts are you cob1? Companies that have a headoffice or other sites overseas may well have people who are working here for e.g. a 6 month period who have left their horses at home and would like to ride.

I know we have a young girl (21) who has had to leave her horse in Geneva with friends to come and work in Yorkshire for 6 months, and I can't find anyone who will let her share a horse or part loan or anything!

Thanks everyone, glad to know it works! I was worried about the sharer wanting to ride at weekends, however hopefully it should be possible to find someone just wanting weekdays.

Luckily im not in a rush with him being exercised anyway, so i should be able to wait and find the right person!!
