Anyone any experience of them, what lines I should be looking etc? (Not to breed, just good strong working lines) as I know nowt about them. We're considering one as our next gundog (as most know we have only had labs before

Cant tell you much about lines but YO's 2 sons both have cockers, younger one is off for her training in the next few weeks ( just turned 8 months ) the older one is a fantastic working dog although struggles in water with larger birds but is very game to give it a try!!
They are both kept as house dogs and are a real pleasure to be about and have lovely tempermants as well as working well.

I love working cockers.

No help to you whatsoever, but I can remember taking our Cocker Spaniel beating for the first time. There were many rolled eyes and knowing glances when our Show Cocker jumped out of the car.

We were addressed as such... "Any chance you can take the Airhead over in that brush with Bob and his Lab?"

Sadly, he ended up living up to his tag and has been known affectionately as The Airhead ever since.

He works so well at home, but take him out and he's a complete idiot! Shameful excuse for a gundog!

Cockers have become incredibly fashionable round here - everyones got one - especially the black ones!

My daughter is desperate for her own cocker to work but to be honest they just don't appeal to me. People try to cajole me into getting one - "oh they are so cheap to keep and do twice the work as any other dog" - but they are just so small and can be even more neurotic than a Springer

A very good friend of mine was judging a Field Trial (champions?) in N Ireland recently - at Castle something? he breeds Cockers - I could ask him of good kennel names if you like.

cockers with 'maesydderwen' (weird, i know) lines are usually well bred as well as 'Swallowlaw' and 'Wernffrwd' lines

as MurphysMinder said, The Openshaws at Rytex kennels have bred some really nice dogs and we have put both stud dogs Chyknell Goldstar and Dardnell Dealer to our bitches, producing some fab pups

My OH has many a cocker. As already mentioned the Openshaws at Rytex kennels are very well known within trialing. But expect to pay mega bucks for one one as they are very well bred.
My OH's most successful cocker doesn't has 'famous' lines, she's just out of a very strong working bitch and she is by far the best, as sharp as anything, nose never leaves the floor and she retrieves the biggest of birds with no problems.
And yet he has a very well bred cocker he paid lots for which has turned out to be a bit useless really- but very cute!
He's having pups out of the good bitch next year, putting it to one of Openshaws dogs- should make really lovely pups!
If you want to know any more just let me know, he's a minefield of info about the things!!

Our ten month old cocker bitch is about to start dummy training, she is the brightest dog you will ever meet, friendly, loves water, comes to the whistle, sits, stays, etc and I wish I had ten like her!!! She can even keep up with our Lab swimming!
We even took her with us to Myerscough last week for the Futurity, no bother at all, in fact you can take her anywhere!
She is Parbeck lines, Parbeck Breeze was one of the top cockers in the 90s. But she came from a lad round the corner from us who has mum and dad. Both work on the local shoot and are just like her

Plus a cocker will work all day, long after the labs got his feet up in the car, the cocker will still be going!!!

A guy up the road from me has bought a very nice cocker (He went to Wales for it?) and I believe he will be breeding her when she is old enough so might see how hers turn out?

We have a 12 1/2 year old working cocker and he is absolutely gorgeous. Lovely nature and very obedient (although they do need training!). We also have an 8 year old cross bred JRT. Anyway we are off to choose a pup on Sunday. What I did was find a good reputable stud dog owner and ask them if any nice bitches have visited. WC's often dont have the tests for eyes etc - the stud I approached had all their stud dogs tested. So all being well... generally I believe that as the dogs are bred for purpose rather than looks they have good biddable temperaments and nice natures. You do need to give them lots of space/exercise though and be firm! Good luck
