Ok search for new puppy is on the cards eeep and OH wants a Working Cocker, he was brought up with them as a child and feels now is the time to bring another into our lives we are looking to move in the next two months so we are just putting feelers out and want some general guidance in what to look for health test wise etc, I'm only used to sled dogs lol.
I'm very interested in taking pup beating etc when its old enough so training etc will be instilled from a young age.
So there we go where should we start looking?

Cyrus,

I have a litter of pups due on the 14th. June, but according to the scanning machine there's only a maximum of 4!! As you're only in Norwich, you can come and have a look, if you like. Failing that, I'd suggest that you look on the website of Planet Gundog. There are several litters for sale, and they seem to go fairly quickly. Some seem to be well bred, and it also seems that the practice of line and in-breeding seems prevalent.

A word of warning, most puppies have fairly hefty price tags attached to them. Assuming that everything goes to plan here, I shall have the puppy of my choice, and what the bitch's owner wants to do with the rest, I don't know, but could ask if you'd like me to.

Anyway, good luck with your search.

Alec.

Not sure what your OH is used to, but just a word of warning....there are, as you are no doubt aware, show cockers, then working cockers and also field trial bred cockers. I would equate these to driving a ford focus, a porsche and a zonda!! It can be a big step up for one to t'other!

Alec - Thank you for the offer but think it may be a little too soon think we are looking at wanting a september onwards home coming for pup.

GG - definitely workers his father used to shoot sadly no longer with us so I don't have his brains to pick our current dogs are working Siberian Huskies and an Alaskan Malamute so used to Zonda type dogs ;)

MJ - lol if it had been a malamute litter I could have been very tempted but Halfers and Vamp halfers noooo lol lol as much as I love Jedeye and Mofo :D

Yeah right, I said the next dog would be one I could let off the lead and actually teach stuff to, I came home with another huskasnoot. Another moot for you is inevitable. :p

Great idea - it'll definitely keep up with the sled dogs too :P
We found our new little lady through an advert on the UK GunDogs site - she's slightly more inbred than I from a purist point of view would like (11% so not terrible, apparently breed standard is about 8 or 9 off the top of my head but they don't differentiate between the types of cocker spaniel ) but as Alec has said they do tend to be more line bred
She's an absolute star and as my dad says every time he see's her "such a happy little dog" (although she's growing rapidly). We've made the most of the events over the weekend to get her out and socialising too and she copes with it all brilliantly; not being too hyper and happy for small children to come and say hi - but given the opportunity will hoon all over the place :D
Get one - you won't regret it :D
